I recently dined at the restaurant before seeing 'The Mousetrap'. The service was good and the timing was perfect. The drink selection was good, including a nice variety of wines. However, I found the menu to be outdated and uninspiring. The starters and mains were decent but not exceptional. My white chocolate parfait was delicious, but the lemon tart tasted more like a store-bought lemon meringue pie. Overall, the restaurant didn't quite measure up to the high standard of dining options in Plymouth. It would benefit from updating the menu to be more contemporary and flavorful. On a positive note, dining at the theater was a nice added perk.
The food at this restaurant was inconsistent and the service was poor. Despite arriving two hours before our theater show, we still didn't have enough time for three courses. We waited over ninety minutes and had to complain twice before our main courses arrived. While my own food (pork rillette followed by beef shin) was tasty, my companion was disappointed with the small portion of Dover sole they received. Overall, a very disappointing experience.
My husband, in-laws, and I had reservations for dinner and a show on New Year's Eve. The venue was lovely, located in downtown Plymouth with a clear view of the Messenger statue (or at least its backside). The service was friendly, but I felt that the prices for our meals were a bit high for the portion sizes (the bread and olives offered at the table were quite plain). However, the main dishes were delicious and the menu offered a nice variety of seasonal options. Overall, we had a pleasant meal with wonderful company, perfectly timed before our show.
As a friend of TRP I eat at the restaurant when attending performances. In this occasion I came to see Cinderella with my family. As is tradition we ate in the restaurant. The starters were ok. Particularly the goats cheese mousse (although minimal) and the...pate. I ordered boulibaisse. You must be joking a puddle of over salted thick sauce in the bottom of a bowl with a few flakes of white fish does not make a boulibaisse. Nothing else not a prawn or other shellfish in sight. My son and husband had fish and chips. All my son said was ‘the peas are good’. Fish small and chips only just cooked. My daughter had the duck. Tiny under seasoned on a bed of over salted inedible lentils. Desserts, cheese and wine ok. Staff polite and attentive but only a few tables occupied. Quietest I’ve ever seen. No surprise. Why didn’t I complain? Well it is the first time we have been together for a while as son lives in Tokyo and daughter London. We we celebrating the beginning of Christmas and on this occasion thé célébration was more important than the food. Thankfully the meal could be forgotten as the panto was hilarious. Will eat outside the theatre in future unless things improve.
