Comida caseira, boa quantidade e boa qualidade.
26/6/22 Sunday early lunch We three British middle aged guys found this restaurant the Saturday night before by accident whilst exploring the old town after our vegan meal in the very good MUSGO. It was about 11:45pm so well closed! I looked it up on TA, found it and vowed to return for lunch the next day. On the Sunday that we checked out of Peter’s Guest House at 11:30 and made our way direct only to find it empty except for a couple eating, who turned out to be the owners having their own lunch before they served lunch. In broken English the holy chap welcomed us and explained they opened at noon, 20 minutes away. We said we would return them so off we went only to double back quickly after thinking that they could store our heavy backpacks until we returned from exploring the salt pans nearby across the canal. We returned at 12:10 to find the small basic historic 70s? restaurant still empty but we were welcomed by the couple and took the table for four where we had stored our bags earlier. The jolly boss gave us an English menu the street A frames and sign outside were handwritten in Portuguese , which was helpful, with seafood and meat separated thankfully as we are pescatarians but do not eat Octopus . I had read on TA that fish stew was the best dish but I saw Eel Stew! My family heritage involves eels don’t ask and the price was right at €10. My friend and I both chose that whilst our friend ordered the fish stew €6.50 . We also ordered a large salad €5 and a litre of house white €5! . The wife ? delivered fresh brown bread, dried brown olives, cheese, sachet of butter and a small round of very hard cheese. this was all on the menu as appetisers and as usual are delivered without being asked for . As we sat we caught up on 4G to book our room ahead in Coimbra that evening. I don’t think they had Wi Fi put it that way. A large plate of salad arrived which was mostly sliced beef tomatoes with olives, lettuce and onion in olive oil sauce and lots of salt which was quite tasty. The main food took as long time to come. At one point we heard the eel being chopped up vigorously! It was all very freshly prepared! I had read the service was slow but worth it. No problem. Other people arrived and the restaurant was full except for one table. Mostly locals but one other tourist family of three. Eventually the jolly owner came with a very big saucepan double portion of very very hot Eel Stew. He warned us not to touch it. Then he delivered a big saucepan off the Cod Stew. They were very very hot and delicious we tried each other’s and actually the bread was needed to mop up, as well as switching the potatoes and garlic. The cod stew had more paprika in we think. It took us some time to eat it as it was so big and we never leave waste. During the meal I explained to the boss my eel related family history Angerburg/Wengorzewo and showed him a pic of the eel I found in my home suburb of Lewisham in SE London! They both appreciated the story and pic! The wine was acceptable and different and helped us eat. We had to catch a train at 1:44 and we’re getting worried. I asked for the bill and told the wife that we needed to get the train which was a good 15 minute walk along the main Central new town road. We got out just in time but a walk on a full stomach in the heat was difficult. We got to the station at 1:40 to find queues at the ticket office with some very slow people buying season tickets. We missed the train as a result and ended up having coffee and a beer nearby at Milenia cafe till the next train at 3:30 to Coimbra arrived.
