Dos estrellas por La Lomita Dos. This place is incredibly worn and mediocre. We came with a group of 8 having called ahead a few hours and making a reservation. We were seated promptly for dinner upon arrival and service was professional and attentive. The menu is conventional Mexican-American. We received chips and salsa with free refills. They were on par with El Torito and Chili 's. Not even as good as Chevy 's, On the Border, or Chipotle. Maybe a half-star better than Taco Bell. The burritos, fajitas, and other entrees we had were meh. We also had a pitcher of strawberry margarita; again nothing to write home about. Portion sizes were reasonable, prices were competitive but pricey for the beat-up atmosphere and cheap quality food. If this place is farm-to-table than so is my old high school cafeteria. You won 't be seeking this place on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives because Guy Fieri isn 't looking for bland flavor-town. And you won 't see my millenial daughters posting photos on instagram or foodie websites because the food doesn 't look exciting and tastes like it looks. The most irritating thing about the place, though, is the fact that they charge a fee for using a credit card. Tiny stickers by the front door warn patrons about the fee, but they are no more prominent than the Visa and MasterCard stickers in the window that people routinely ignore. It 's a hidden way of jacking up the price a few percent yo cover the credit card commission and leaves the same impression I get from the airlines that charge to check a carry-on- not customer friendly! As I mentioned, this place won 't be on the Food Network or Cooking Channel anytime soon. Unless, of course, by some miracle it ends up on Restaurant Impossible with Chef Robert Irvine taking his sledgehammer to the place. Let 's hope that happens sometime soon.
This used to be my friend 's favorite place but it has definitely gone downhill over the last 2 years. I gave it 2 stars because of the margarita not watered down and we asked for no ice. However, the salsa was very watered down and the onions seemed sour or off somehow. The nachos were not the best and certainly nowhere near the what they used to be maybe they 're still recovering from the pandemic or have changed chefs? I don 't know but the prices have increased and the food quality has definitely decreased. If you come here, come for the margaritas and skip the food. Oh, and when the bill came it was added up by hand not a cash register which was weird and was wrong. Be sure to double check the prices on your bill (compared with the menu) and be sure it 's correctly added. I noticed some reviews from a couple of years ago where there was a $1.50 tip added to the bill our bill was off by at least $3.00, don 't remember the exact amount but that adds up. When we told the server he didn 't seem at all concerned about it and just shrugged it off. I 'm sorry to say but we were looking forward to this meal and were definitely disappointed. Most likely won 't come back.
I'd call this more of a 3.5 rating. Food was decent and reminded me of some of the Mexican food back in California. I especially liked the salsa and the refried beans. To note, I ordered this for take out and my taquitos were soggy. Will have to try eating in at some point. Sadly, I ordered based on their menu listed online and the bill was much higher than I anticipated. Based on the calculations of the prices listed on their website, my order should have been around $12 but rather it cost me $20. I probably wouldn't have ordered dinner from here if I knew that is what the total would be.
Having a good rapport with the staff at this hidden gem of a restaurant definitely enhances the dining experience. Despite its unassuming and casual atmosphere, the location in Capitol Hill may be unexpected. I thoroughly enjoyed the salsa, chips, and the pitcher of balanced margaritas. The lomo saltado was outstanding and cooked to a perfect medium-rare as I had requested. The service was also exceptional.
