Big R - St. John's

If you want decent home cooking at a reasonable price, then this is a good choice. Old school, basic restaurant with small tables and booths but the food is tasty. I started with the home made beef brisket soup. Really flavourful and full of delicious root vegetables. Served with two pieces of buttered home made bread, which was great for dipping into the rich broth. My main was the fish and brewis. Large portion of salt cod and the hard bread with scrunchions mixed in. The scrunchions were underwhelming but overall, a good dish. Very good service and a warm environment. I will be back!

Dined here twice during my recent visit to St. John's. On one occasion I had Jigg's dinner, the other I had pan fried cod fish. All was just awesome! Staff are wonderful! Can't wait to return!

I love the Big R. I have been coming here since I was a child. Best fries and gravy in town (in my opinion) and fantastic chicken. Reasonable prices.

Ordered fish and chips and a fishcake Thank god I was hungry it was greasy and pre cooked but I ate it and suffered the next day. The fat they use must be old it smelt.Im not going back

Salmon and Chips is excellent ...... quality of everything served is excellent for what you are ordering. There are some quirks. Air quality tends to be poor, inadequate ventilation. You can't get a bill from staff and have to go to one cash to pay by credit card and another to pay by cash. Most peculiar. It takes longer to check out than it does to order your meal and be served
