Let me preface this by saying even though there are many criticisms in this review, this is still one of the better hotel experiences my wife and I have had.So, two times the water throughout the hotel was shut off during our stay. Unlucky or aging infrastructure, I don 't know. The trolley noise at night was probably the worst part of the entire stay and woke us up from sleep several times every night. Thankfully wife brought a white noise machine that lessened the wakings, but this is still probably the biggest con. The wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling and held up by tape in several places. Near the tub, rusty condensated water is slowly eating away the walls behind the clear plastic tape holding up the wallpaper. Parts of the tub were rusting into nothingness, like showerhead and the drain stop lever. The bathroom counter was broken and crumbling near the faucet but was hidden because it 's an aging marble. The toilet ran water constantly. The toilet seat was loose and wobbled. The central AC was mostly great. Quiet, effective, cold. But one night it just stopped working for some reason leaving us to roast in our bed as the bedding sleeps quite warm. The bed was decent, one of the better hotel beds we 've stayed at. Firm, good size, 4 big pillows. The comforter felt small for the bed. Like it 's a queen comforter on a king bed. Only 1 ice machine in whole building is kind of lackluster. Would be nice if they would bag the ice and put in a freezer downstairs so guests could grab a bag before going up to their room. Location of hotel is phenomenal. On the SDCC shuttle route. Next door to a cvs and several coffee spots. Staff was nice and professional and great to interact with. Valets were always cheerful and were great to interact with. Overall decor of the rooms feel old for the sake of being old and beginning to disintegrate into disrepair. MiniFridge was unplugged initially and didn 't work great. In-room safe did not work because it relied on old room key design. Tv was rather small compared to other hotels. Not the best view from the large wall window, even on the 13th floor (room 1499). Granted this is a north facing room so not much to look at.If they could repair all the aging issues of the rooms and somehow fix the trolley noise, this would be the best hotel in San Diego.
The Westgate hearkens back to a golden age of travel and leisure. Every detail has been given attention. Every member of the staff is welcoming and engaged. The rooms are serene and sumptuous, perfectly prepared. The beds are so high quality that for the first time in all of my travels, I do not look forward to returning to my own bed.The Westgate encourages harried wanderers to take a step apace and explore what has become nearly a mythical experience; that of perfection in hospitality. From the palatial architecture, the fresh cookies at the front desk, the inviting parlor, to the wonderfully solid brass appointments in the bath, this hotel encourages guests to embrace a more measured and deliberate pace in life.We are fortunate to have a couple more nights in this wonderful establishment.
Absolutely loved this hotel! It was elegant and relaxing with many surprises. Traveling for work, I didn't have high expectations. It was so pleasant to have Rodrigo, Hotel Hospitality waiting at the curb to help me with my bags after a full day of travel. The lobby was immaculate with it's grand staircase (that I later took photos on). I met Tahliah at check-in; who helped me learn a little about places to visit. In my 4day/3night stay, I enjoyed the having complementary spa access, close proximity to Petco Park/ Convention Centerand of course Gas Lamp (for the night life). My room was beautiful, overlooking the city and always clean with the hard work of the lovely Ms. Rosa. While I didn't go to the afternoon tea, I loved passing by as others partook. Hats off the the waitstaff for the cutest 4year old birthday tea party and the musicians for the soothing harpist. After work, I loved the half-priced happy hour menu and jazz band. Actually, I truly loved it all. For a large hotel, it has an intimate, regal feel. I felt like a queen. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience in San Diego!
Went here for afternoon tea and would not recommend. Very restrictive: only 1 pot of tea allowed, only one scone served. All of the desserts were ice cold like they had been sitting in freezer. Also, did not serve in traditional style. Served in courses so process was lengthy even for afternoon tea. Very nice ambience but the service and value needs a lot more attention. Gratuity was auto added and not earned.
