It was a former monastery, they built wagon wheels, and kept, bees. Then the nuns had it, and they made fine linens, with looms. Eustachio's family has been there for 4 generations. Giulia, Estachio's helper, then came in, and explained to me in English, what Eustachio's had explained to me in Italian. Also, Eustacio's son is in California, USA, and brings, 30 students, every year. They made the masks in my photo, they all sign them for Eustachio and leave them in his cafe, as a remembrance.
It's hard to say this is one of the bet places you'll visit in Matera, because they are all so wonderful, but Altereno Cafe is truly unique and breathtaking. You would never guess from the outside what lies behind the walls, but make sure to take the drink you order outdoors to the many terraces to truly appreciate the beauty of Matera. Find the owner, Anotonio, and talk to him about the place, it's history as he has such a strong passion, you will leave loving it even more then when you fist saw it.
We were looking for a bar with a view and this was recommended by Jean- Franco from our hotel. How right he was! Such a spectacular view of the gorge and the owner, Antonio was a perfect host providing 2 amazing wine recommendations (we visited twice) and his enthusiasm for sharing the history of his property and the family connection was fabulous. Don't be put off by the street presence as the rear terrace is a hidden gem!
