What used to be a bar called Murphy's, Union Jack Tavern Makati is a British pub and restaurant offering a variety of authentic British food. It looks intimidating up front but the place looks cozy inside. And that's exactly what the owners envisioned it to be, to have a go-to pub for foreigners and locals where they can just watch the game or meet with friends with their favorite beer and barchow. Besides the usual barchow, they have fish and chips, and pies, good for lunch or dinner. I personally enjoyed the Fish and Chips. For P425, you get a big slab of fish fried in batter, served with huge cut fries. Squeeze some lemon on the fish and you're good to go. This was really enough to satisfy my protein fix! I also liked the Spicy Buffalo Wings (P295). If you like spicy, this indeed makes the cut. This would make you reach for glasses of their houseblend ice tea even more! This dish comes with celery sticks and a blue cheese dip, which complements the spicy wings well. UJT also serves pies made with their signature Bisto gravy. The Shepherds' Pie (P425) prove to live up to its comfort food status with a creamy and cheesy mashed potato topping over a savory meaty base. Other favorites are the Steak Pie and Chicken and Mushroom Pie, both at P395. All pies are served with your choice of two side dishes, and you can opt to have Mushy Peas, Baked Beans, French Fries, Hand-cut Chips, Corn and Carrots, Mixed Vegetables, French Bread or Plain Rice. There was also Lamb Shank with a tasty barbecue sauce, and a Sausage Roll best eaten with mustard dip. I like that their pies look rustic and homemade but are big enough for sharing. The pastry is flaky and satisfying and works well with any of the meat and gravy filling. The Chicken Quesadilla is also a must-try. These are perfectly seasoned pan-fried chicken breast strips with melted cheese, green chilis and white onions in a large flour tortilla. Dip it in garlic sour cream and tomato salsa and this makes for agreat appetizer! They also have British Indian food fare such as Chicken Curry and Chicken Tikka Masala, both served with fragrant Basmati rice or Pratha bread. The Basmati rice was done well, although I was looking for the usual butter that goes on top. Both servings of Curry and Tikka Masala were served hot, with chunks of chicken and potato. I must say I would have wanted bigger chunks of chicken as they do tend to get lost in the sauce. UJT caters to all ages as well. As a parent, it was a treat to see they have a kids' menu, and a mini-store where they sell imported chocolates and sweet treats. I was eyeing the candy eggs as we were going out! UJT Makati is indeed a gem in the Legaspi Village area. I would return first and foremost, for the comfort food goodness they provide with their fish and chips, and shepherds' pie. And second, because the ambiance fairly reminds me of McLarens', the pub from my ever favorite sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. Lastly, I definitely agree with the owner's vision of having a place just around the corner where you can just hang-out by yourself to enjoy a cold mug of your favorite beer after work, or dine with your friends or loved ones, a place where you can bring anyone to unwind and just chill.
