Later I had to listen to complaints about how angering the food was here. Almost $100 for 3 people to eat a pretty terrible meal. Same story cited by everyone: staff is really friendly and sweet, but the food is terrible. Pricing is beyond exorbitant for what you get, which is a bunch of overcooked, overfried, processed food. I bartend AND have to fry my own food at my bar when I have customers, and I can tell ya that just about every single item rolling out of here came out of a freezer bag that was purchased in bulk somewhere else. $22 for halibut and chips. Fries, of course, are straight outta the freezer. Coleslaw is in a cloyingly sweet, thick sauce. Halibut itself is not bad, but it's $22 for three chunks. Tartar sauce bad. $10 for jalapeno poppers that 95% chance are purchased wholesale from Costco or Sysco. Cooked to hell and served with ranch that was purchased by the gallon at a Sysco food wholesale. Almost nothing here is fresh or housemade. I feel bad for the staff since they are put in a position to try and sell expensive, processed meals to people with keeping a smile on their faces. Owners have absolutely no pride in their product and should be ashamed of what they serve. Location is merely a turn-and-burn cash cow for tourists to eat at.
I have no idea why this place doesn't get as much praise as I think it deserves, but I will more than happy give my testimonial on how amazing this place was... A drive down to Seward for the weekend left my friends and I starving. We came in at an odd hour for lunch so we had limited options on what to choose. We decided on a whim to eat some fish and chips with the huge sign that acted like a lighthouse for all who want some grub. We walked in and the place was mostly empty until Terry himself greeted us with a smile. We sat a table and he got our drinks a bunch of beers were ordered. My one beer fiend friend wanted some suggestions on what to choose and Terry offered him a sample to try which led to him choosing his beer. Now the food is where this place shines. The menu is pretty small and looks like it was hand written and photo copied. Of course there are fish and chips, but different options on what type of fish you'd like. All of us chose the halibut since we are in Alaska after all. I also got it with some fantastic clam ? chowder that most of my table ordered as well. All of us were raving of the fish. It was nicely battered and still light when you bite into it. I would have eaten my fries, but it was still Lent. My friend ended up enjoying everything else for me. Such a sacrifice! I paid around for my meal and beer. Probablyh the most satisfying meal we've all had in Seward and maybe in all of Alaska.
If your looking for good fresh seafood don't look here. The rice was good and so were the vegetables. I'd give Terry's a 2 star but they are basically 100 feet from an endless supply of fresh fish and should get it right. The price is not inexpensive as represented on Yelp. Spend the extra 2 dollars and go to Chinook across the street or get the pizza next door. Even the chowder was terrible.
Finally found a good fish place in Alaska. Who knew it would take so long? Prompt service, lovely waitress, and perfectly cooked food. I would just say the crust on the fried fish seems a little thick, not as fluffy, and fries aren't as to die for. But the fish is cooked perfectly for the baked dishes, and the crab is amazing.
The one star is obligatory but also for the awesome and welcoming waitress who greeted and served us. Without her, and if I could, this place would get zero stars. We ordered the halibut plate and the rockfish plate, respectively. Both were cooked to a crisp; extremely dry, battered too heavily, and hard. I suspect we both got the same fish because it tasted the same off both plates: like grease. And the prices were bananas! I mean, it's small town Alaska so you have to expect that ... but $21 for a plate of overdone and awful fish and chips is just highway robbery. Keep the waitress, fire the cook. Have some pride in your business, people.
