Contribuiți la feedbackI had a wonderful experience at this restaurant! The hosts were friendly and sitting at the traditional low tables in a beautiful garden setting provided a fantastic cultural food experience. My family, including my teenagers who claim they don't like tofu, really enjoyed the meal. We were the only westerners there at the time, which added to the authenticity of the experience. I would definitely recommend this place and give it a 5 out of 5 rating. Just a note, there is no signage on the door so be sure to follow the map to find it.
This restaurant offers traditional Kyoto-style tofu dishes with a beautiful view of their private garden. The food overall was delicious, but some dishes contained dashi which could not be removed. They were not willing to substitute any non-vegan dishes, but fortunately, one person in our group ate meat so the food did not go to waste. Despite informing four different staff members that we were vegan, there seemed to be a miscommunication (even though one person in our group was Japanese and there was no language barrier). The vegan dishes we did receive were tasty, but caution is advised, especially for those who do not speak Japanese fluently.
When in Kyoto, be sure to indulge in the top quality tofu cuisine that the city is famous for. If you find yourself in the Higashiyama area, Okutan Kiyomizu is the perfect spot for a delicious tofu meal. Set in a serene setting with a view of a beautiful Japanese garden, Okutan offers a set tofu meal that is sure to impress. Make sure to inform the waiter if you are vegan so they can accommodate your dietary needs. The meal includes various courses such as mashed yam, baked miso tofu, boiled tofu, vegetable tempura, and rice with pickles. Okutan provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourist-filled streets, allowing you to enjoy a soulful meal of tofu cuisine in a beautiful setting with excellent service.
I was really looking forward to going here again as I had gone with my mother 10years ago. I remember it was delicious. This time most of the food was good but not great and the tempura was a little tough. Perhaps overmixed or the batter had gotten too hot. I would have been happy enough if it hadn't cost Y4100.
This restaurant is amazing!!! Great location, relaxing atmosphere. Perfect for a meal in the right Japanese style. The food is divine and not expensive, taking into account quality and location. Note that Kyoto cuisine is famous for its light taste... to bland for many Westerners.
