Café des Alpes - Iserables

If you happen to be in the area of Riddes in the Swiss Valais, or the ski resort of La Tzoumaz nearby, you should not miss the opportunity of a lunch in the Café des Alpes in the high perched traditional village of Isérables. The village is named after the emblematic trees that grow there (érable is the french word for maple tree).The food is absolutely delicious and the service flawless and friendly.You can reach Isérables either by taking the cable cabin from Riddes, or using the postal bus that drives through Isérables, from Riddes to La Tzoumaz, or, even better, by walking the lovely path from La Tzoumaz.You will not regret the experience.

Fabulously decorated, a gem hidden at the end of a long path or piste depending on the season. Fantastic view, excellent food, brilliant service, it'll take a little courage, by car, foot or ski, but well worth the effort.

I arrived in Riddes to see a friend of a friend. I asked what to do in the area. He recommended I take the funicular into the Alps to a small town called Iserables. OMG. Almost a vertical accent. The village is tiny but amazing views. Virtually on top of the world. I ate at "Restaurant Alpes. It overhangs the cliffs and was a little unnerving. Settled into my room which was adequate, and had dinner in the restaurant. Incredible simple. I had the true Swiss fondue. I was served a hot plate with seasoned sliced new potatoes, then the waited would come by with a cart. It has a mini-spit in it with a gas jet flame. On the spit was a large wheel of cheese. He melted the cheese then flopped it on the potatoes. When you started getting low he would come by and give you more cheese. What a fun experience.
