We were driving through town late at night and found this restaurant open. The food was amazing. If we had been staying closer, I would have definitely gone back for more.
My wife , daughter and I visited Moville for 2 weeks this summer and after tasting this owners fishnchips we came back 3 more times (located across the street fr beach and docks). Living in Vancouver, Canada, we find the best tasting fish is always fresh cut, cooked to order and never frozen no matter how fresh flash frozen at sea its promoted, nothing compares to really fresh fish as we learned new things from this small owner operated fishnchip gem. Prior to Carey 's(may also be called Greencastle Fish n Chips), we had very good fnc in Penzance, Morton 's in Balleycastle Burdocks in Dublin, but learned that many people rate good to excellent with how golden crispy their fnc is because they 've never had anything truely flavourful and its flavor that will trump super crispy for us everytime. Now Mortons and Burdocks cook off beautiful, large, golden crispy fish that look like 10 stars w matching crispy chips, but these shops are geared to kick out volumn process line ups so their quality is good for what it is; they have to buy, preprep and handle in large volumns. Greencastle is small, quieter and not geared for such volumns so one has to wait as each piece of fish and chip is cooked to order. Her fish crust is not as crispy crunchy hard as these other places because there is so much moist juice coming out of the fresh fresh fish that its another experience all together! So much moist, almost dripping, juicyness fr a cut piece of deep fried fish? Doesnt sound real, not what crispy fish should be, yet thats one gets when the haddock was caught and brought off the dock across the street just that morning, then hand cut and cooked to order one at a time. Once youve had this you will know what I mean and going back to other places their fried fish will taste bland in comparison no matter how golden crispy they may look. About Chips...I love super crispy hot chips...prior it was that texture over taste; Greencastle was the first time in my chip eating experience that I could taste the real flavor of a good fresh potatoe, its subtle sweetness and hot creamy texture in harmony because the chips were not super crunchy crisp. It could have been a particular variety of loco potatoes she got just at that time.. mid August... and maybe not repeatable, but id have those delish potatoe chips again as I long, from this side of the Pacific ocean, for her fish above every other fishnchip places we tried. If your a super crispy texture eater over moist tender flavor, then the Mortons and Burdocks are for you, but I hope you experience this difference first!
We just ambled in ordered fish suppers and dander Ed back and really enjoyed. Good quality fish and good chipshop chips
The fish and chips at this restaurant were the worst I have ever had. The fish was greasy and the chips were below average, as shown in the pictures. They were not served in a box like I had received before. My daughter's chicken bites had chicken pulp in them. The girl managing the shop on the evening of July 24th, 2017 was extremely rude. When I asked if they accepted debit cards, she abruptly said no. When I asked about the allowance on sterling, she was also very abrupt. The worst part was when my daughter, who has a speech problem, was given a nod of the head instead of being allowed to order. When she started to speak, the girl interrupted her to take another order. This rudeness was completely uncalled for. It is disappointing that a business in such a beautiful setting with potential could have staff who are unable to interact with customers and serve subpar food. I will never return, as the girl's attitude was unacceptable.
