So why are some more popular than others? Mohamed Raffe, or locally known as Raffe, has been in the same place for about two decades. During his early days it was simply a Mamak restaurant, selling the usual fare found in most Mamak shops. Since the addition of Nasi Kandar about 10 years ago, lines began to form outside the restaurant for the food. With the social media that continue to expose it, the restaurant now has queues that can see almost 20 to 30 people in the line waiting to order their meal. Parking is difficult in the morning and afternoon hours, as the surroundings lead other cafés and even a park here to the Pulau Tikus market. But don't give up because there is usually a pretty fast circulation of cars. The food is really delicious, intense curries taste a bed of rice, and the meat is perfectly cooked. The fried chicken is also very good (at best to come at 11 a.m., as the first few batches of fried chicken come out and are often refilled with fresh batches). Beef is not too hard, and the lamb is tender and juicy. Prices are very reasonable, and a hearty meal with meat, vegetables and some egg can be used for under RM10. All you need is your meal with a great teh tarik, and you're all set.
Was recommended by a friend who is a local Penangite. Been coming here ever since; each and every time i come to Penang. Can choose to have your kuah campur spicy or not spicy.. There's always a queue, even at night time. But not such an issue cause the queue isn't that long. Service is good, always nice and friendly. But their drinks are too sweet. Have to ask for kurang manis.
Memang Nasi Kandar terbaik la Kat Penang. Been a regular customer since I was a kid been about 2 decades now hahaha. The quality of the food is really top tier. Nothing beats the portion of any dish in this shop compared to other shops. Crowded almost all the time. Be prepared to wait if you want to get some good food. Nasi Kandar here is always a 10/10.
Was recommended by local Malays as an option. This had the highest google map rating. Lol. The queue stretched 5 shoplots. There were 100+ customers in front of me. I waited for an hour. 3 servers dishing out food at speed. So that's a ~2 min wait each customer. There's only 1 queue here if you're dining in or taking away, you must line up. But it's well worth it. Honestly. I had my rice like a local. Fried chicken, cabbage and 2 ladies fingers. Mixed curries. It was out of this world. Chicken meat was so tender. The cabbage boiled till it was soft and they were generous with the curries these were boiling away in a pot. It was spicylicious. A must try!
Long queue alert... Mouthwatering, big, hot, fried chicken is a must for their nasi kandar. A plate of full savoury gives you a good punch in your Mouth. Taste wise, nice. The environment quite overcrowded and dissatisfied hygiene. People may comment it like overrated, but as local food reviewer who tasted all the Nasi Kandar around Penang, they deserved top rate not just because of 'viral ' but their good food being served since long time ago.
