We stayed at the Gaudemus hotel and had dinner one night. The indoor dining room is lovely cosy and intimate. Since this was in the summer dinner was served outdoors on the terrace, which also was quite nice although the main street runs just outside the wall so it 's not particularly calm in any way. But it was ok for us. Cooking is not in any way bad. On the contrary, fine and fresh ingredients and obvious knowledge in the kitchen, which focus on fish and seafood. As a starter a fish ceviche very fresh. For main we had a whole seabass to share. Typical home cooking recipe of Italian cut, primarily in a tomato sauce stew. Nothing fancy. Genuine and well tasting. An unexplainable dip was the wine list because there was none. The waiter/proprietor just bringed something after a question of wheter we were interested in white or read. Never mind, it wasn 't an upscale evening and we didn 't feel upscale. And Prosecco is right in the area, so why not... As it is in Italy these days, it isn 't cheap, Almost fairly fair, bud a notch too expensive for the overall quality of the food and service. You could eat here or not...
My wife and I celebrated our 44th wedding anniversary at Gaudemus. We have made this our restaurant of choice on several other important events. Once again, from a warm and friendly greeting at the door, through antipasto, first, second courses and desert the experience was perfect. The wine list was also very well selected. If you want to David absolutely fresh sea food and fish plates, exquisitely prepared and beautifully presented then Gaudemus is the place for you. Compliments to the Chef and staff. Se will certainly visit again.
Excellent dinner. Great food, impeccable wine, and attentive and friendly service. We will definitely be back!
Lovely terrace behind a wall, giving seclusion from the road, nice white cloths etc so at first glance a delightful place. However, the waiter (is he the owner? was wearing a terrible old red football t-shirt and could not even bring himself to smile at us. Someone needs to tell him he needs to smile and pretend he likes his job, even if he doesn't. The menu is old fashioned and very expensive. Our friends wanted just a small antipasto and maybe a pudding, but that wasn't possible because even the starts were around 20 euros. The waitress was at least friendly, but despite our fluent Italian, seemed to think we didn't understand anything, certainly not fine dining. This is not a good attitude for a waitress (is she the owner and therefore considering herself above us all? We asked for half a carafe of house wine because that's all we wanted to drink. She bought a bottle. We said we didn't want a full bottle. Oh, you only pay for what you drink, she assured us and added, we find most customers drink the whole lot. No! Wrong attitude! We did not want to drink more than half a litre between us as one of us was driving, one not drinking etc. Our choice. In the end we drank 3/4 and of course were charged 25 Euros for the privilege ie whole bottle. Another thing the waitress could have warned us about was the sheer size of the meals. Instead she said, oh wait until you see the food, you'll be amazed, you'll be delighted with what you ordered etc etc. She was downright patronising. The food came and it's no exaggeration to say my dish of tempura could have easily fed three and my companion's pasta dish, happily four or more. They were ridiculous portions! And although they were quite nice, they were nothing special at all. In the end we left with a sense of having been in some way duped. Of being badly treated, not looked-after or cared for, all the things that can make dining out such a joy.
