The sushi is consistently fresh and delicious, with a wide variety of options to choose from. It's hard to find someone who doesn't enjoy the sushi at Sushi Garden, making it one of the best, if not the best, sushi restaurants in Burnaby.
This restaurant offers a diverse menu beyond just sushi. The seafood is incredibly fresh, and the nigiri has a higher fish to rice ratio, which is a definite plus. The staff is very efficient, though the restaurant lacks a cozy atmosphere. However, it's a great spot to spend more time after dinner.
Sushi Garden has to do something right because they're still here. You have a number of sushi foods along this route of Kingsway, chief among them Yakko and Satomi. And I admit that at first this surprises me because I always respect Yakko and Satomi in high-... like the food blogging community; in fact, a blogger even told Satomi: “Well, this place is a million times better than sushi garden.” I competed with this view and thus accused Satomi's closure in 2018 (NOTE: The former Yakko/Satomi is now at home at ColourSee . . . .. see my earlier review of them on this page). In my opinion, I struggled with how a perceived low-quality brand – Sushi Garden – could hold a far superior product. So I imagined seeing Sushi Garden a few 15 years after my first visit. Would I go with a changed view and perspective? My biggest criticism of Sushi Garden – when I was here with my sister over 15 years ago – was the size of her roles. They were MASSIVE and vice versa, i.e. the Maki was on the inside of the roll. As such, if you tried to pick them up, they would fall apart and the Innards would land all over the plate. The final result was not funny or pretty. Greater is not always better. Would I repeat this experience in 2022? I arrived during the noon and, unstoppable, the place was busy; but I could get a table right away. It seems Sushi Garden has received some quite significant renovations as I was last here. The bland off-white coloring was replaced by a much more contemporary look. The soils were re-donated; the chairs are of a newer style; and many of the walls now have beautiful stonework. Ironically, the general aesthetic looks in many respects similar to the former satomi on the street. In short, it is a good look and gives Sushi Garden a beautiful re-fresh. In terms of food, I have ordered a number of articles . . . MISO SOUP: The broth was rich and tasteful – a beautiful way to start my lunch. In addition, there is not much to say because, well, it is quite hard to screw this basic soup. EBI SUNOMONO: Served with 2 Ebi, purple cabbage, julienne carrots, cucumber, rice noodles and vinegar, this salad was refreshing and the part not too big. I would have liked more in the way of noodles, but that's a little handle. SMOKED SALMON NIGIRI: From everything I ordered, this was probably the item I expected most. Although Yakko has been gone since 2016 and Satomi since 2018, I still hold her version of the smoked salmon nigiri on a podium. The ratio of fish to rice was always on the spot and the “incense” taste was, in my opinion, unsurpassed. How would Sushi Garden hold? I ordered two pieces and to be blunt, I really enjoyed them. The salmon was fresh and the smoked taste was clearly visible. In this respect, Sushi Garden reminded me very much of Yakko/Satomi. I only wish that the accompanying rice did not serve such a miniscule. Nevertheless, I ordered this article again during a subsequent visit! EBI CONE: I grew quite well over the years to temaki sushi, so I wanted to give Sushi Garden an attempt. It is quite simple and simple: 2 pieces of shrimp, Mayo, cucumber and rice packed in seaweed. I like that – uncomplicated. There is not too much to say except I thoroughly enjoyed this article and it, along with the Smoked Salmon Nigiri, represents clear highlights of my visit. CHICKEN KARAAGE: At its base, “Karaage” is only easily combated in oil. In this respect, the chicken caraage of the Sushi Garden is good. The chicken is crispy on the outside but remains moist on the inside. It's not oily in the least. The light pepper and salt coating supplements, rather distracts, from the chicken. A great appetizer! PRAWN SWEET POTATO TEMPURA: For me a good tempura should have a light dough and remain crispy, while at the same time letting the basic components shine. Without being too wordy, Sushi Garden does this and the final result is a delicious treat. BC ROLL: This Maki Sushi features BBQ salmon skin, cucumber, salad, mayo and fish roe. While it sounded good on paper, the BC Roll was probably the biggest disappointment of everything I ordered. In short, I remember my experience here more than 15 years ago: Most of the indentations fell on the plate when the counter-roller is picked up and puncture. I gave up the clinks because I used my hands was hardly measurable. I suppose I could forgive myself if the roll was done well, but the salmon skin was missing the cripple and basically took a relapse of everything else in the roll. KAPPA ROLL: I ordered this very basic role on my last visit, and did so easy to see if all Sushi garden rolls were gargantuan. Fortunately this was not; so I close only their most basic roles are of normal size, while the rest is excessively large. FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 3/5 VALUE: 5/5 RECOMMENDATION: It's kind of funny. When I came here, I expected that I revived my experience 15 years ago. But that's not what happened. Outside the BC Roll everything else was either “good” or “very good”. I was surprised – so much that I stopped trying more articles again. Sushi Garden cannot be Yakko or Satomi, but it is quite close. And the sushi offered here is light years better than everything in Metrotown. The best part? It's cheap! My bill was just over $40. The food was good, either maki, temaki and sashimi. I enjoyed the scallop temaki and the surf clam sashimi. Never had before. Almost all the tables were occupied on a Saturday night. Gently staff but putting a bit of pressure as they wanted to close
