Contribuiți la feedbackTook my brother and sister in law for dinner heard the food was great here it was not. We started with an escargot appetizer that was served with wonder bread toast! The only decent meal was the special my sister in law had the seafood dish that she ordered over pasta. I thought would try the goulash it was a brown mess with no flavor. My husband had ribs which were ok, but not anything special. My brother had the Weimer Schnitzel it was tasteless and the mashed potatoes were watery and worse than boxed. We were celebrating a birthday and they did a nice job on the cake plate but the dessert was just meh. For the price and the hype, we expected SO much more. What a disappointment! Oh, and we met the crabby waitress having read the reviews we were ready for her but she really needs to find another vocation! Don't waste your time or money on this place there are better choices in the area.
OK...how can I put this. We travel 1 hour to go to this restaurant and enjoy the ambiance and best of all the food. This is our second time their and both times we walked out saying why is this establishment not so busy that we have to wait to be seated? Both experiences were amazing and the food is 4 star. I just don't get it. Well be back again and I'll post my results again, but I already know what I'll say....great. The service was fantastic and I really think if you read this review you owe it to yourself to try it out...you will not regret it.
Finally had the opportunity to go to The Old Gristmill after living in the area for 31 years. I have driven past this place many times and always wanted to give it a try, but never got around to it. I had heard from friends it was good, but from the outside I guess I couldn't get my head around dining here. Well I was wrong. Yes the place is old and a bit outdated, but that doesn't make it a bad place. Sometimes you have to look beyond a buildings facade. As I said, the place is a bit outdated, so you'll need to look past that. The main room has a number of views of the waterfalls on the Shawangunk Kill and the tables are well spaced apart for privacy, which I like. The food is outstanding. I had the Rack of Lamb and my wife had the Rib Eye Steak. Both were served with a side of potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Portions were large and I thought the food was well prepared and presented nicely. We also had dessert; Apple Strudel and Chocolate Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream. The service was very good. Very friendly staff with the right amount of attention. If you're looking for a nice back road country place in Sullivan County NY, The Old Gristmill fits that bill. Overall a nice time and I would go back again for another special occasion. Food: 5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Ambiance: 4 Stars The place need a little updating Wine List: 4 Stars Could use a few less expensive items Price: Location: Off the beaten path. Country backroads
The service was absolutely terrible. The waitress reeked of booze and treated us like an inconvenience even though we were the only table in the entire place. The food? Spectacular! I had the Cassoulet special. Pork tenderloin, lamb and duck over a white bean ragout served in a copper pot. It was perfect. It was flavorful, cooked perfectly and beyond delicious. I savored every single bite. Dessert was a homemade apple crisp with rum raisin, pumpkin ice cream. This was the absolute best meal I've ever had (minus the service) From the previous reviews, they need to seriously change the server.
This was an extremely pleasant meal. The atmosphere is a bit dated but don't let that deter you. The waitress who has been there for decades is knowledgeable and too the point but gracious in the end. One noteworthy point is that they accommodated my no dairy request which I was pleasantly surprised with. I asked if they could make the escargot with out butter or dairy at all, and the chef made it happen! I had one of the best swordfish meals I have ever had. That's a big deal! I'm picky to say the least. Another thing, the portions are huge. I'm talking really big. One of us got lamb chops and it came with 8! Normally four is max, this was big. And delicious! You should check it out. Negative and reason got a 4 star: freezing cold air conditioning, stinky bathroom, small ice cubes in drink melts fast and waters your drink down decor outdated. Still totally go again! Probably gets a 4 1/2 star from me if it were possible. But let's end positive here. The owner ran out to see if we wanted a group picture after we were completely done and headed to our car. Very cute gesture Nice bridge for view and water fall man made , but sounded great. Decent price. Expected it would be more. Actually worth more, tasted great 4 top entrees, 2 appetizers, 2 deserts, four drinks 208 plus tip
