The Square By Coffee Lab - Winchester

More recently the Square has gone a bit downward. The coffee is still great but the carrot cake I had last time was extremely dry and did not taste good at all. I love the little garden space at the back but with the kitchen vents it does not smell nice at all. Building in very run down and tired. Look forward to what they do with the refurb.

Visited today 10/9/22 with family, son starting Uni in the town, Ordered food and drinks for 6 people, not cheap nearly £70 For basically a sandwich and a drink each, Waited over 20 mins for the drinks to arrive 2 coffees and 4 soft drinks, one of the glasses for the soft drinks was filthy, Waited over 40 mins for the 6 sandwiches, so slow ! 1 of the sandwiches had raw bacon and sausage in which they refunded us for, Our table wasn’t cleaned before we sat down, absolutely filthy, The whole cafe looks and feels like a good clean wouldn’t go a miss. Not a great start in Winchester, I’m sure there’s better, Definitely won’t return here

We stopped in for a spontaneous lunch. Staff were friendly and polite but it took half an hour for two toasties and some tap water to arrive. The chilli jam on the toastie was far too sweet with no kick at all and one side of the bread totally soggy. The side salad tasted watery and bad..such a shame as it is a lovely spot.

At The Square a few weeks ago on a sunny afternoon in Winchester. Nice little cafe a few minutes walk from the Cathedral. Staff are friendly and cafe clean and tidy. We sat at the front the first time and in the covered courtyard at the back the second time. Had a lovely sausage roll there, nice cakes too! Just one thing though...along the back wall of the covered courtyard there is a covering of plastic greenery which works well, but to the right, where there is a stair-case down to another building/cellar, there is no covering and I think it would be good to add some greenery there to hide away the stairs area. Otherwise, highly recommended.

We stopped by for a quick drink en route to the Cathedral. The front of the cafe looks very empty, but that is because there is seating at the front and also in the quiet courtyard behind. Service was good, and the covered courtyard meant it could be used in all weathers. The only downside was that the toilets were a long trek up to the second floor!
