Mermaids Fish Chips - Winchester

Reheating doner meat in front of me and charging 10 pounds for it is unacceptable. I will not be returning and I strongly advise everyone to steer clear of this place.

I was very disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. I have ordered from here twice now. The first time, I found it to be quite expensive, but I thought maybe it was because I was ordering for a large group. Today, I decided to give it a second chance. We ordered 2 medium cod and chips, but were charged for large portions. We also ordered a battered sausage and chips. Despite being told there would be a six minute wait, we were served with fish and chips that had clearly been sitting out for a while. The quality of the chips was inconsistent - some were delicious, while others tasted old and stale. Although this restaurant is local to me, I would prefer to drive past it and go to a much cheaper and tastier option in St Cross. The size of the fish was more in line with what I would expect for a small portion, and while the chips were plentiful, most of them ended up being thrown away because they weren't enjoyable. I do not plan on returning to this restaurant again, which is a shame.

This restaurant offers more than just tasty fish and chips, which are freshly cooked to order, so expect a bit of a wait. They also serve pizza, fried chicken, and other typical dishes found at a fish and chip shop. There is free parking available outside, as well as a nearby local shop, launderette, and excellent Chinese takeout. Just a heads up, the fish and chip shop is closed on Mondays and the Chinese restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Both places offer delivery within Winchester.

A bright and very clean shop, a friendly smiling greeting, lots of things to choose from. I came away with very good fish and chips.

Where do I start? The cod was over cooked and the batter at the ends was almost solid, not crunchy at all. The chips tasted (and looked) as if they had already been cooked previously and had been reheated. The Pea Fritter and Sausage in batter were tasteless. Could not taste the salt vinegar either. They also do pizza's which I hope are a lot tastier. Truly dreadful.
