There's a reason that Alo is the top-rated restaurant in a city of thousands of restaurants. It's not just a meal, it's a culinary journey. I scoffed at the sheer snobbiness of needing to reserve my table 60 days in advance at the stroke of midnight. Not 59 days, not 61 days. 60 days. But, I get it now - with only 13 tables and about 2 seatings per table (you're capped at 3 hours, and we used our full 3 hours), it all makes sense. I'll avoid spoilers, but will suggest the following:- Go with the wine pairings. It'll add a lot to your bill, but their sommelier was brilliant, passionate and the wines truly complimented each dish. 8 "tastings" worked out to about 3.5 glasses of wine. Plan ahead and Uber or taxi home.- It's a tasting menu of small plates, but it's enough food that you'll leave full. - The best service I've received in my lifetime at a restaurant. Nearly a different person brought out each dish and described its elegance. I'm not exaggerating: if merely one droplet of condensation dripped from my glass on to the table, someone was by shortly to dab it up. Napkins were folded the moment you left the table to use the restroom... and you choose from a selection of napkins at the start of the meal. Unreal. In summary, DETAILS. It's what makes this super expensive meal totally worthwhile. And, the staff were humble and appreciative of feedback, questions and compliments so you never felt out of place even at this classy, classy joint. Strongly recommend!
The restaurant is truly amazing. From the moment you enter the restaurant they anticipate your needs. The service is amazing and the food even better. Every plate is a vision and the tastes dazzle the tongue. The wine pairings are amazing and Britney's descriptions of the wine are fantastic and go with the food beautifully. The bread course is truly amazing. You could just keep eating it. I just want to move in to alo and eat there every night. Reservations are tough to get but it is definitely worth it.
Can't seem to get a reservation at Alo, so went to the bar (early) one evening before an event. Loved it.......interesting room, great bar tender. Excellent service - perfect balance of chat & leaving us alone. Ordered two apps each - portions were generous, everything was delicious.
Both the quality of the ingredients and the cooking are below average. The cuts of pork were definitely below average as both pork dishes have a distinctively pig sty smell to it. The cooks do not know how to cook pork belly, as the rind was as hard as a hard candy, the fat was still chewy, and the meaty part was dry and tough. Any cheap Chinese restaurant up Spadina serves up better roast pork belly at one quarter of the price. The scallops were of low quality. The ones from Costco were much better. The kimchi pork used sauce straight from the Korean grocery. The shrimp crackers were stale. The preparation of fish tartare has much to learn from Le Bernadine. The only dish that was passable was the potato, and the trout. It was a complete disappointment as all of us around the table could cook better. This may be the number one over-rated restaurant, but definitely not the best in terms of quality.
