Sagami Japanese - West Collingswood

This is our favorite restaurant on the planet I can’t believe I hadn’t reviewed Sagami until now! My husband and I have been coming here since we were first dating and we absolutely love it here. The ambience is wonderful and unique. Everyone here is always so nice and accommodating. The food is downright delicious, and is second to none! We especially love getting the negimaki (beef scallion roll) and soft shell crab roll. Sagami has been here for nearly 50 years and it’s no wonder why! We always look forward to dining here. Thank you for doing what you do we’re so grateful for Sagami!

The food was great and with reservations everything went smoothly. The place feels very authentic and it also shows in the taste. The experience in itself did feel a bit rushed, getting the feeling to finish up quickly so new people could be seated. It's sort of understandable as it's a smaller restaurant and they have limited opening times. Still, for quality, one of the best places around in it's Japanese cuisine. They had the freshest fish I've ever tasted. The wait was long but it was well worth it. Make sure you have a reservation first.

I was actually super bummer about this, we have heard nothing but amazing things ga about it here. We weren't impressed. Sushi was okay, no exciting rolls. Meal options no one really loved what they got. Teriyaki sauce was great but other then that meats were not seasoned it's like they threw the sauce on top. Not sure that we will be back.

Food quality was solid, portions were good sized. Prices felt a bit high. That said, it took substantially longer to get the food than expected. Our table was shocked when I handed her the signed merchant copy of the receipt and she said “the tip needs to be bigger than this” and she put the receipt back down on the table for me to add more to the tip and stood there watching; my tip was already at 15-16% and the service was only fine, nothing outstanding (eg, had to wait a little long for water refills a few times). As far as I know, it is not customary to tip exuberantly higher at sushi places compared to other restaurants, so 16% felt fair for the service received. Did not like being told to tip more.
