I ordered two eggs with home fries and pork roll and was charged A la carte for the protein which I NEVER heard of a diner doing that. The silverware felt grimy. We are originally from NJ which is a State known for their many diners. Having said that we have eaten in our fair share of diners over the years, and we can say with a good deal of confidence that this one fell short.
Good diners are generally known for their great breakfasts served 24/7. However, this diner came up very short in this category. I can't say that anything we ordered was very good but the scrapple was quite bad and my wife's Greek omelet was more like a scrambled egg with almost no cheese and other ingredients. After eating the breakfast, we understood why this diner had so few patrons in it for breakfast.
Omg do not waste your time! It is completely dirty and unappetizing. The out front looks inviting, as soon as you open the doors forget it. The walls are torn apart dust and dirt on the window and booths. As we walked in we saw the breakfast Buffett. The wait staff was dumping food off of plates into the pans. The patrons were coughing and not covering the mouths. We knew right away we would skip that and give the regular menu a chance. We tried the Florentine Benedict and the spicy Cajun Benedict. So the spicy Cajun was saturated in hot sauce (literally soaked the English muffin and had a puddle around the potatoes. The scrapple was so hard and definitely precooked (Probably days old and warmed up in microwave. The Florentine Benedict had frozen bagged spinach (so watery on it. The egg was overcooked. The potatoes weren’t too bad!! The whole atmosphere was run down and dirty. The wait staff had food all over their shirts. The floors were sticky and gross. I can’t even imagine what condition the kitchen was in. How can a place stay open like this and not be shut down by the Board of health !
This was a very good diner, and we stopped every time we were in the area. Recently they put a very nice front on the diner, but they must have forgotten that food is why people come ! Food was not edible. Salad bar was sour tasting if it had anything with mayonaise in it. Soup tasted like dishwater. Wait staff could care less that we were there, and it was not crowded, so we sait for half hour waiting to place our order. Will not be back.
I have lived in Downingtown, PA for a year and a half now. One thing I DO miss about NJ (and there isn't much) is a good diner. I just happened to be driving up West Chester Pike toward 202 and BINGO. There it was. It looks like it's being built, but actually it's being renovated. It's open for business. It was an odd time of the day (2:30 pm) but we were hungry for lunch. So my girl friend ordered a burger and I ordered a Turkey Club. Both were outstanding. Fresh turkey, not dry and lots of it. My girl friends burger was exceptional. Juicy, tender and tasty. We liked the fires too. The service was very good too. Our waitress was very nice, funny and did not get lost during the course of the meal. That in itself gets 20%. So if you want a diner that would be well received in NJ. Go to West Chester Diner. Closer and just as good.
