I just wish the restaurant was open—I've heard great things about it. I can’t wait to return! The deli offers an impressive range of meats and cheeses, and don’t overlook the fantastic selection of candy.
We discovered Morse's sauerkraut while enjoying Reuben sandwiches at Moody's Diner in 2018, and we finally had the chance to visit Morse's in September 2021. It's a fantastic delicatessen! They offer an impressive variety of international products, along with delicious homemade pickled vegetables and cured meats. This hidden gem in Maine is definitely worth a visit. Be sure to stop by for your next picnic lunch! The staff is also very friendly!
This delightful hidden gem offers a fantastic array of European, Asian, and Arab delicacies. The selection of canned fish, cured meats, pickles, and other specialty items is impressive! As a New Yorker, I am truly surprised by the variety available here, especially considering it's located in the middle of nowhere, Maine!
We thoroughly enjoyed dining at Morse's Sour Wort! We're really saddened by the news that the restaurant has closed.
As a hearty eater, I decided to order the spätzle (not sure if that's spelled right) and a small bowl of mac and cheese, which turned out to be a bit too much food. But that's alright—there's always the next day! The spätzle was very simple, made with lemon, butter, and herbs, but it tasted exactly as described, with abundant lemon flavor complemented by subtle herb notes. By typical American standards, the mac and cheese might not be very cheesy, but when you use high-quality cheese, you don’t need it to be overwhelmingly cheesy! It was fantastic, and the crunchy pretzel topping provided a nice textural contrast. I don’t often order mac and cheese at restaurants, but this was one of the best I’ve ever had—perhaps even the best! Now, back to why I rated this restaurant five stars. It’s not difficult to take a $20 filet mignon, make it taste good, and charge $60 or $80 at a fine dining spot. Just cook it to medium-rare, add a bit of salt, pepper, and maybe a touch of butter—easy. However, turning something as simple as spätzle into a delicious dish is quite a challenge. Simple, uncomplicated food can be the hardest for even Michelin-star chefs to get right, especially when it comes to vegetarian dishes. Morse's provided me with simple yet incredibly satisfying food. Yes, there are only about five tables, and you might have to wait a while for a seat, but the wait is entirely worth it! Another reason I gave such a high rating is that Morse’s isn’t just a restaurant; it’s also a food shop/deli filled with wonderful gourmet items at very fair prices! While food snobs might debate whether this restaurant deserves five stars, there’s no denying that the food shop/deli definitely does! The cheeses are amazing, and the meats look fantastic. One of my favorites is the ten-year-aged cheddar, which has a truly incredible flavor complexity. Don't miss the pickles—everything is good, but the sour garlic and sour mustard pickles are unmatched. The samurai pickles with ginger are also exceptional. And of course, the sauerkraut is the best I’ve ever tasted. If you’re a foodie and find yourself within an hour or so of Waldoboro, Maine, and you don’t stop by Morse’s, you’re really missing out!
