Koiso Japanese - Village of Westbury

This is a lovely traditional Japanese restaurant. I had the seaweed taco, and it was amazing. I've never had anything like it before!

The food was authentic Japanese. Everything was so good. The owner came out to chat with us and he had some experience in the restaurant business. The sushi was so fresh and the service was on point. Everything was so well made and you could tell it was Japanese made sushi. Will become a favorite.

The lunch set is a fantastic deal at $19.95, allowing diners to choose from four sushi entrees, accompanied by a small salad dressed with fresh ginger, and a generous bowl of tanuki udon. The udon was delightful, featuring a subtly sweet broth, crispy tempura flakes, and plump noodles. We opted for the five-piece nigiri sushi for our main course, and every piece was fresh and tender. Being quite hungry, we added a few extra appetizers. Koiso's age dashi tofu was one of the best I've ever tasted—lightly fried with a thin coating, it sat in a flavorful broth and was topped with chopped green onions. The shumai dumplings were excellent too, filled with savory shrimp and wrapped in delicate dough. For anyone who may have had an average experience at Koiso in the past, I highly recommend giving it another chance for their enhanced service and delightful home-style Japanese dishes. There is free street parking available in front as well as a small lot in the back. I can’t wait to return and explore more of their sushi and cooked offerings!

I visited Koiso last night after not going there for a while, and I could immediately tell that it had changed owners since the Japanese couple who originally opened it is no longer involved, which was disappointing. The pork katsu curry was a bit dry, but the sauce was very tasty. The sushi and sashimi platter was generous in size, but it didn’t quite match the authentic omakase quality I remembered from before—though it was still decent. The presence of white tuna typically indicates it’s not in the authentic Japanese style. On the plus side, the prices were reasonable.
