A small, but great and cozy local restaurant that is guided by a beautiful couple. on the menu you will find super fresh seafood or meat dishes that are cooked to perfection and served with a large smile. if they are lucky, they can try the juicy tomatoes directly. her garden as a free extra. Do not miss this gastronomic opportunity.
This place is authentic Portuguese and you get the impression it has been there since Manta Rota was a fishing village. A lovely welcoming family run place with amazing fresh food. To give you an idea they put a massive tomato salad on our table,...explained it was from their garden and 'on the house ' I had the Monkfish rice stew which was amazing as was the prawn spaghetti and steak. When we left they were queuing outside the door and I understood why and felt like we had been treated to a real Portuguese institution. Excellent, friendly and a delight. I hope the older couple running it never retire.
We visited in June 2019. The spaghetti with prawns coriander is to die for. The grilled dourada or roballo or tuna steak are excellent. Clams are fab. Its a bit old world but the food is great and great value. Nice sobremesa if you...can fit it in after all excesses. The sheep's cheese with the couvert is good and good value at €2. They used to do a Fado night on a Friday but this seems to have stopped. Don't miss A Proa, its one of the best place to eat in Manta Rota 2nd only to Cha com Agua salgada ,
We had read about A Proa in the past but we were reluctant to try it as I 'm a vegetarian and it seemed to be basically a sea-food restaurant. This time we tried it and we were very glad we did. We were warmly welcomed...by a getleman and shown to a table, then (maybe because we were English speaking) the proprietor came to serve us She has a remarkable gift for languages and when she realised we were Irish she greeted us with 'Cead Mile Failte ' (Irish for A hundred thousand welcomes)...very impressive! It was so good we went back twice. I was very happy to have a mixed salad and a cheese omlette and chips while my wife had the monkfish rice (very generous portion and very tasty) another night she had the sea-bass served with vegetables and potatoes and was very pleased with that too They had an interesting (and very affordable) wine list. We like to finish our meal with fresh fruit and we enjoyed both the fresh pineapple and Galia melon. We also enjoyed an Amarguinha as a digestive, something we first tried in the Algarve nearly thirty years ago. This is a family run business, serving excellent Portuguese cuisine. Plenty of locals are regulars here and that speaks volumes for the place. We enjoyed the service, the atmosphere and top quality dishes. It will definitely be on our list for a return visit.
