Kussmaul - Vienna

If I could I would give this 0 stars as it was the worst dine out experience I had in a long time. The photos on TripAdvisor don 't reflect the reality of this place at all. 1. Cold atmosphere 2. Waitress not very welcoming and...unfriendly. 3. Waitress seemed very much out of her depth. It seemed she didn 't really know what was on the menu communication was difficult as she seemed to struggle with understanding German 4. Menu: wide range of cuisine pasta, schnitzel, burgers, steak... 5. We ordered 3 steaks. 1 rare and two medium. The all came out pretty much rare. All looked the same. 6. The Waitress had asked those who ordered steak if they either wanted fries with it or grilled vegetables. They decided for grilled vegetables but this was never served. 7. The veggie burger was meant to be a falafel burger with halloumi. Issue was the falafel burger had nothing to with falafel... it was basically a mix of couscous, grated carrots and courgettes. It was falling apart and tasted of just salt. It basically had nothing to do with a falafel burger. It was not eatable and I sent it back to the kitchen. 8. The salad was also not very good. 9. It took quite a long time for the food to come put despite the restaurant being pretty empty. Also the steaks came out at least 5 minutes before everything else. 10. The Waitress had to call the manager to ask what to do about the bill, she was unsure whether or not to charge me for the falafel burger that wasn 't a falafel burger and that I had sent back to the kitchen without eating more than one bite of it. 11. They also wanted to charge us 2×1.50 Euro for a "Brotkorb "x 2 we never had. 11. There was no apology for the really bad food I had in front of me and that I sent back. We didn 't complain about the other dishes, although none of them were good and everyone was pretty disappointed. A real shame :

Don’t know which restaurant others are talking about here but our experience was terrific. Staff was welcoming and very helpful. The chef even said he’d bake some gluten-free bread which was as close to the real thing as you can get. I had veal shoulder...which was tender and flavorful while my wife had grilled octopus rather than fried because of her allergy. It too was very good. Try this place, you won’t be disappointed.

We first discovered Kussmaul when it was based in Spittelberg and fell in love with its interesting quirky food with impeccable service. The move to a central location brings it to a much gloomier venue, and the touches that helped make it exceptional are lacking. We were surprised to find it empty when we arrived - previously we have always had to book in advance so perhaps it's previous clientele share our disappointment. The menu concept of tapas style courses and a few main plates would be fine if the prices weren't quite so high. I felt a bit sorry for the couple next to us who ordered starters and then the beef - the meat dish looked delicious but would have fed a family of four. At 60 euros for the meat course I would have been really cross that I had no chance of finishing. We went for five tapas dishes. The poached egg was sublime, the trout good and scallops delicious. I can't remember the fourth dish- which says it all, and the pork was very ordinary. I missed the little touches - bread isn't bought automatically, no amuse gueule (In fact the bread is extra) The puddings were a disappointment- come on Kussmaul only two choices, one of which is a sorbet with cremant and the other a chocolate fondant which isn't cooked properly is a lazy offer at the best of times but when the menu suggests a wide choice it is a particular disappointment. The service is still excellent with great advice on the wine, but the reply to my request for a pudding wine just about summed it up. No they didn't have a choice of wine, not they didn't really do pudding wine any more but they were happy to open the next best thing- which they did with great charm and good humour.

We are foodies, and eat out often, but needed to google a few things before ordering. The food was good, but for the prices, we thought portions were small. We had to keep ordering more. Service started out great, but had to chase them down a few times. The owner seemed like a great guy, he helped us with wine.

Nice service, great food. My second time here and am impressed. Have never been here for dinner, though.
