Its history is linked to that of the Malaspina family which, in 1164, obtained the fief of the territories ranging from the hills of Rivanazzano to Oramala, directly from the Emperor Federico Barbarossa. The oldest part of the castle probably dates back to the second half of the 13th century. After the division between the Malaspina in 1275 that sanctioned the beginning of the Marquisate of Varzi, the Marquis of the branch of Spino Secco decided to build a new village in a higher position, next to the existing houses. There are clues that suggest that the new buildings were built on the first of the two orders of walls, the one with round walk, above the ditch, whose realization had been put in writing in the document of division of the family. It was then in 1838 that the life of the Malaspina family was interwoven with that of the Odetti family, when Marietta, the last survivor of the ancient house, married Count Carlo Odetti of Marcorengo. Its descendants are still the owners of the castle and since 1983 they started a courageous conservative restoration that, thirty years later, led to the openness to the public of its spaces and the organization of public and private events.
