One family member is pescatarian and had many options for either vegetarian or fish dishes. They choose the salmon encrusted with coffee and loved it. Other family member had the vegetable Alfredo with chicken while I had the reindeer medallions which were tender and delicious. Finished with the s'mores lava cake. The meal was pricy but worth it.
I used to love this place and always looked forward to eating at The Wheel House. What a total disappointment it is now. I have no idea what happened but whatever it is, isn't doing the place any favors. The Limited menu was a surprise, and they were out of most things. The food that was available was terrible poorly cooked and even worse quality, and specially for 45+ a person. There were no familiar faces, the bartender was a bit snarky, and the atmosphere was definitely tense. What sad news to learn that the once best place to eat in Valdez is now the worst.
This is one of the best restaurants at Valdez. 1. The food is wonderful! They made a simple BLT taste like a gourmet sandwich!!!! Honestly I was never more surprised a sandwich could taste that good. Also, the desert we got.. Out of this world! It was so good and absolutely worth getting. 2. The server was very sweet and attentive, the restaurant and bar were very beautiful, and the outside view of the docks are very nice. Go here now, you won't regret it!
My wife and I visited the Wheelhouse on June 20, 2023. It was clean and well lit, and the ambience was OK, nothing fancy. They had a nice selection of beers, and I opted for the Alaskan Amber, which was great. My wife ordered the cod fish and chips and I ordered the halibut tacos. My wife was pleased with the amount of food she received and was very happy with the taste. My fish tacos were good, but came with no sides. So essentially I paid $10 for each of my three tacos and got no nachos, no corn relish, no rice. Would have given it 5 stars if I had gotten some sort of side with my tacos. Service was prompt and the food was ready pretty quickly. Meals are VERY expensive in Alaska, so expect to pay $60-$70 for a meager dinner for two.
The food, view and service was great! We enjoyed everything and would definitely go back!
