Matthews Cafeteria - Tucker

After years of hearing about how good Matthew’s is we decided to give it a try so off we went last night arriving about 630p. Let me say first that a cafeteria style meat and 3 with good tea and simple desserts is a personal favorite. It’s really hard to screw it up. Matthew’s succeeded! Upon entering we grabbed a tray, napkins and forks (no knives or spoons available) only to discover that we needed to regroup since everything we grabbed was sticky and just not clean. Once we secured clean utensils we proceeded down the line with about 3 customers ahead of us and by now 1 behind us. We made our selections, paid and grabbed a table. Our plates were abundant and we dove in. We both got the turkey and dressing with 2 sides and corn bread, 2 teas and 1 piece of pie. The turkey and dressing was not even room temperature so after a few bites we decided for safety reasons to not eat it, the sides were also not warm and a gelatinous mess, the pieces crust was charred and burnt as was the cornbread. We wanted to share our thoughts but could not identify anyone that seemed to be in charge. The staff was all very pleasant but individually busy with their assigned task. In conclusion considering that the tab was $40 including a 15% tip we will disappointedly not be returning. There are better values within walking distance.

Fantastic southern cooking with some of the best banana pudding I’ve had. The drive through was packed on a Sunday at 11:00 AM, but it was worth it. Just allow extra time to get through, come at another time, or walk.

We traveled 45 miles just for the experience. The food was pretty good, but no better than similar home cooking restaurants. They only had small drink glasses ready when we went through the line and no way to refill. I was really disappointed and very, very thirsty.

Good food with fast service. The prices are reasonable and the portions are large enough for at least one left over meal. I must come back to try the desserts. I highly recommend this place for good down home cooking.

Southern comfort food at its best… Been a loyal customer for the past 50 years!
