I was here in my second night to visit Toronto. I liked the atmosphere and the food was delicious. Great margheritas too.
Kitschy, small, with a cozy front terrace, this Resto is embedded among old houses in the middle of a residential street and has been a local favorite for years. The servers are friendly and the food is delicious. The bar menu is a nice bonus...(go for the mojito or an icy cocktail.) The best is to share different plates tapas style, so you can rehearse lots before you even realize how full you are. Among the favorites are the pulled beef, coconut war and ground potatoes filled with beef. Fun and taste make Jukies Cuban a must.
My fiancée decided that he would like to host his birthday party in a Cuban restaurant, so we chose Julie. 10 of our friends from all over GTA invited to come. We took a cab from Brampton to check this place and it was 35. Birthday, I brought a cake to celebrate. The drinks were great, but I found landing the appetizers and entrees. We had some fantastic Cuban cuisine in front of Manhattan and outside the resort in Cuba and this is not compare. But the reason we left in our mouth with a real sour taste and why we will never go back is when it came to dessert. I was informed that the owner imposed a $3 per person cake cutting fee. Let me just say that I worked for 10 years in the restaurant industry and have never heard of it, along with all my guests I met through the work in restaurants. Regardless of the fact that I couldn't do anything now, I had already bought and brought a $30 cake, so we agreed to the prosecution. This is not the part that has upset us, which felt very exploited to us, was the fact that 1. They didn't do the cake I thought the cargo was for, cut my fiancée and spread the cake. 2. They accused us of any person present, even those who had not eaten the cake, including a two-year-old child. 3. They calculated not only $3 per person to keep our cake literally in their refrigerator, but also on taxes and GRATUITY. I make tips for a life as a bartender, but I don't expect there to be a tip when I make my guest and serve their own drink. Absolutely ridiculous and disgusting. I tried to talk to the owner this night, but he had already gone home for the night and my concerns were just met with "it is our policy". The $30 cake cost me $50 to go in a fridge for an hour. $80 in total to finish a meal that was also not cheap. Between the 12 of my friends, we spent a lot of money there to make the owner so cheap. The only NUR saving grace was our server James, who was very apologetic and a fantastic waiter. Absolutely will never be again, I will spend my hard-earned money elsewhere that do not use their guests like that.
This wasn't my first visit there and I have to say it wasn't as enjoyable as my previous visits I'm hoping it was just a one off. The fritters are amazing they alone are worth the trip. Overall food is good service is good prices...are good. It's an average place. Careful not to go on Sunday they're closed.
