Contribuiți la feedbackHouse of Gourmet has been around in Chinatown Toronto for a very long time. They serve all the usuage noodles, congee, rice dishes. We had no problem getting a table for 10. Service was fast and the food is pretty good. We liked their daily soup and their roast duck. Great place for quick lunch
Amid mixed reviews of this busy eatery, my family and I have found it a good eatery. It's as Cantonese as one can get: noise, traffic, gourmet dishes, small dishes, and even fusion food (such as sandwiches, salads, curries, and dumplings) like all my favorite comfort food in Macao when I was a child.Yes, the place is a beast of noise, steam, food aromas, and table-sharing when crowded, but we have found it an honest and good place to eat: no fuss, reasonably priced, quick, and generally friendly. It has a typical noodle-making department displayed to Dundas Street pedestrians, and when one smiles or waves at the noodle chefs, they usually smile back with steam rising from broth and noodles they put in bowls for customers. My family and I have only bought BBQ there a few times, but it's the kitchen food that takes us back many times. If one likes Cantonese food such as rich sauces on rice and noodles, fresh vegetables, and savory seafood and meat dishes, this is the place.Mind you, there are a few large tables reserved for single customers and twosomes to share with others when the place is busy and crowded. We have seen many solo lunchers who just want a fast, simple meal before heading back to work or school. They know House of Gourmet is always consistent, inexpensive, and satisfactory. The place does have strong food smells because of the wide variety of dishes: spices, curries, broths, sauces, meats, seafood, pickles, and even warming medicinal casseroles -- they all contribute to a very Cantonese eating experience that I remember from childhood. However, if you don't like this kind of Cantonese food experience, there are lots of restaurants in Toronto that specialize in Szechuan cuisine and other regional delights.Thank you!
This restaurant is an old stand by, centrally located in Chinatown, easy to find, lots of seating, reasonably priced. Noisy as heck when it is full, which is most of the time. The food depends on the chef of the day. Sometimes it is absolutely sublime, sometimes it tastes like someone threw a few ingredients into a pot and heated them up. I go back frequently because when the good chefs are around, you just can't stop eating. Young Chow fried rice, noodle dishes, a variety of beef and chicken dishes, veggie dishes ... There's something for every palate.Stay away from the "specials" ... They are the worst, tasting like they came out of a can, not authentic to any ethnicity! The menu is vast, so it may take a few attempts to discover your favourites, but there are some delicious dishes. Beef with black pepper is a consistently well made dish, as is the oyster and eggplant hotpot ... And I would order a fried rice or noodle as well just because they are so good when the good chefs are in the back!
First of all, when I entered the restaurant, I was gonna puke because of the smell of the restaurant. So I decided to take out but that was wrong. Both tray that I got stink af and I couldn't even stay in my room.
After shopping all day with my Japanese cousin she decided to take us down town for a lunch to "really really cheap restaurant with really really good authentic Asian cuisine". The place was a buzz with people coming in and out... We didn't wait too long after walking in off the street, the staff was fast and efficient and after we made our orders out came in what seemed to be large amounts food on plate after plate our table soon looked like a feast for a king. The meal was pretty inexpensive and tasty and left us with more than enough left over for a hearty midnight snack and Sunday dinner... The squid and beef are highly recommended
