The large pastry crust was overflowing with a poorly filled, gelatinous gruel, with only a few tough chunks of beef and minimal pepper. Despite this, it is still better than most pies found on highways, which are typically subpar. The price of $7.50 is reasonable for a highway stop, but would be considered overpriced elsewhere for this quality of pie.
I will always love Beefy’s pies – I was introduced to Beefy’s by my grandparents and we would eat Beefy’s pies with mashed potato and vegies when I stayed with them and we always loved the fact the pies were packed with chunky real beef and were locally made (by Mr Beefy, as we would joke). Since then, Beefy’s has become the stuff of local legend, and Beefy’s pies are regularly eaten for dinner with my parents and often pop in for a Beefy’s pie at Glasshouse Mountains off the Bruce Highway when I am driving from the Sunshine Coast. The Glasshouse Beefy’s has barista coffee as well which I have taken advantage of a few times. The sausage rolls are great too! There are 9 Beefy’s stores in South East Queensland, from Mango Hill to Gympie. Beefy’s started out in 1997 on the Sunshine Coast and we as Sunshine Coast locals were early adopters.
We stopped at this restaurant for a late lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the great variety of pie options, some of which have won awards. We were especially impressed by the gluten-free range, which is approved by Coeliac Australia. The restaurant goes above and beyond to cater to the gluten-free community with separate containers and ovens. They also offer freshly fried hot chips. Located near popular food outlets along the highway, this restaurant is a reasonably priced option for all types of eaters. One of my family members has FODMAP sensitivities, particularly to Fructans, and found the pies to be gut-friendly. I tried a Thai-flavored pie from the regular range, while others in my group had plain, cottage, and sausage roll pies.
The pies at this restaurant are delicious, plain and simple! There are plenty of options to choose from, but the plain steak pie was especially lovely. Definitely worth a stop for a quick bite!
