I had read online that this particular type of tea originates from Taiwan, but it appears that Asians from various countries appreciate it, as most tea shops in Sydney are run by Asians and cater mainly to an Asian clientele. Intrigued by the popularity of this tea trend, I decided to try it out for myself and made my way to the nearest tea vendor, which happened to be 'Queen of Spades' on Golburn Street. Keep in mind that this is a cash-only establishment, so make sure you have money on hand before arriving. I opted for the Swiss chocolate milk tea with large black pearls as topping. The drink came in a generous portion and had a delightful flavor profile, reminiscent of a mix between black tea and hot chocolate. The tapioca pearls added a fun element to the experience, with their chewy texture making it enjoyable to slurp them through the wide straw. However, due to the size of the drink and its high sugar content, it is undoubtedly a calorie-heavy choice. The starchy tapioca pearls also make the drink quite filling. Unlike coffee shops, there is no option to choose the serving size, and the cost varies depending on the type of drink and toppings selected. In my case, the total cost came to around $5. While it was a fun experiment to try this unique tea concoction at 'Queen of Spades,' I personally found that the high cost and calorie content did not justify making it a regular indulgence.
I had a fantastic experience at this restaurant with their amazing bubble tea! I love experimenting with different flavors and toppings. On my last visits, I mixed lavender and pistachio tea with almond milk, and added boba and lychee jellies. It was delicious! They offer a wide range of flavors and add-ins to choose from. The staff was very friendly and always made conversation, enhancing the overall experience.
A great place for bubble tea in Chinatown.
