We chose this place to try traditional German cuisine and were not disappointed. We tried the soup of the day, different meat dishes, sausages everything was delicious. For those who are hungry the portions are huge! The staff (maybe even the owners? were also nice and tried to give advice and explain the dishes.
We went on sat for lunch. The food wasn't good. Worst schnitzel ever had. I ate a sort of local filled dumplings (not my favourite, I found out) ... mostly the sauce wasn't nice at all. While the waiter was carrying them, he asked another waitress (or restaurant manager) to take something off of the dish (as he had both hands busy)...that she did, I couldn't see what... The same waiter went to and from kitchen continuously, each time stopping there, eating and drinking... to have the bill, it was a challenge to make him looking towards our table and ask for it.
We 've always regarded the Marktstuble as a slightly posh way to get a nice meal/drink in a crowded location. It 's nearly always busy, it 's extremely traditional Schwabisch catering, and it 's always been dependable. OK, you may have to wait a while, as its internal layout is what can we fit in here? and they had to put a kitchen somewhere but the food is good, the beer well-kept, and the staff formal. Until this time. It 's a busy, sunny Saturday afternoon, the Volksfest has just started over in Cannstatt, and there was a table for two in the sun. Ideal, we thought. Then the waiter for this area clocked us, found we were tourists, and it all stopped working. Yes, we had the menu, and 25 minutes later we had our drinks. We still couldn 't get his attention for ordering the food, so we decided (with considerable unhappiness) that our afternoon should be saved from this. So, after 40 minutes, I tried talking with the waiter re the bill; At the table. was his only comment, so I suggested to my wife that she should continue window-shopping and I 'd wait and sort out the bill. 5 minutes later, bill arrives, and surprise is shown that we 're not staying for food. I 'd since passed into my 'calm ' state, smiled, tipped him the regular amount (which he then short-changed), and left. It 's a shame. It 's been so good on our previous visits (usually twice a year since before dirt), but this experience ruined the Marktstuble for us. Caveat emptor....
So macht Essen Spaß!
