We came to visit our friend in castle Cary for New Year, we decided we wanted to go out for New Year’s Eve and picked The George in castle Cary !! We ordered our meal starters and mains, our friend ordered the parma wrapped monkfish which was still wrapped in the cling film so glad she didn’t eat it, our granddaughter had the garlic bread which in her words tasted of nothing,The whitebait was very over cooked, the mushroom starter was quite Tasty but very peppery. Mains we ordered 2 lamb leg steaks from the grill menu with chips mishrooms onion ring etc and 1 liver bacon Mash and a portion of Chips Chips are very good , our lamb steaks turned out as slow braised lamb shoulder with dauphinois potatoes and veg. We didn’t order this but when we said was told they only had that. Liver and bacon meal was very good . Desserts admittedly was now getting late lots not available so we ordered what we wanted but was told that that then had also sold out . so we went without . The whole meal was pretty much a disaster and I was saddened that we had had such good reports previously, although the staff were very friendly , but it was disjointed and unorganised, so come on the George!! it needs to be sorted better than this or you will just continue to loose customers . This whole meal has put me off re visiting but would hope someone will look at what is going very wrong .
Five of us stayed at The George Hotel in Castle Cary on a Monday night and decided to eat in the Knight 's Restaurant. Having a variety of starters, mains and deserts we found the food to be very good with superb presentation and fairly priced. Sadly the service by our waitress was a let down and spoilt what should have been an excellent meal. We 're not sure if she was having a bad day or is generally unhappy but 'service with a smile ' it was not; it felt like she didn 't want to be there and serving us was a bit of a chore. The rest of the staff both in the bar and restaurant seemed fine.
We decided to celebrate my husband's birthday at this restaurant located in the George Hotel. We opted for a Sunday lunch. The restaurant and bar exuded a cozy and warm ambiance, making it ideal for a cold winter's day. It had the quintessential English charm and felt very inviting upon entering. The service was excellent, and the food was incredibly delicious - fresh, well-cooked, with a variety of options at reasonable prices. The dishes were like homemade comfort food, without being overly elaborate. We even requested Yorkshire puddings as an extra, and our request was accommodated. We would definitely return to this restaurant.
Popped in here for lunch on a wet and windy Sunday lunchtime, greeted by a nice open fire and real ale at the bar. Service was attentive and friendly and we decided to have a bite to eat in the bar area. Food was very nice and arrived quickly. Overall a nice welcoming bar with good food and beer.
