Apparently not so as we were not allowed in the cafe and were told we could sit outside. This was on a day that there was a yellow alert for the area regarding weather. Lots of dog walks, but nowhere to eat A bit pointless. I'll walk the dog elsewhere.
Beautiful location with a wonderful forest nearby for walking your dog. The staff is very friendly and the coffee is top-notch.
As a returning customer we love the Big Red Barn, their food is always first class and delicious and the staff are always friendly and happy to please. It is clean and welcoming and there is a good variety of food on offer, personally our favourites are the soup, and all the baking especially the scones and fruit slices. Enjoyed browsing the unique Scottish gifts on sale also. It’s so relaxing to wander in the grounds, and have a seat in the garden area.
My usual lunch spot, while generally good, is a bit on the expensive side. However, today when we arrived, it was only offering takeaway. We ordered a ciabatta and 2 sausage rolls, nothing fancy, and it cost us £19.60! The price was way too high for what we got. The girl who served us seemed unhappy, and overall, it wasn't the best experience. We had to wait outside for our food, and the smell of blocked drains was unbearable. Overall, way too expensive and not worth the money.
We have been regulars at this restaurant since it first opened and have always enjoyed the food, although I personally do not like sugar in my cheese scone mixture. When we visited on Tuesday this week, everything seemed normal until we reached the car park and saw a sign saying takeaway only. We understand that there may be a shortage of staff, but it would be helpful to know the menu options in advance so we can decide whether to continue down the road if necessary. The breakfast options were limited to bacon or sausage rolls, and I requested an egg roll but was told it was not possible even though they clearly had eggs available. Despite the takeaway only policy, we noticed many people around and decided to sit outside to enjoy our rolls. The food was good, but we were disappointed by the abrupt service from the chef/cook who seemed to practically throw the rolls at us. It's a shame, as this restaurant is located on a busy road between the motorway and Edinburgh and should be thriving at this time of year.
