Contribuiți la feedbackI usually don't give a 5-star rating because most places always have room for improvement, just like people. I prefer simple Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Korean, etc. style food. If the chef cooks like they're making a meal for their own family, rather than catering to American tastes, then they have my vote. Too many places in the Midwest tone down the spice for American palates. This place, however, knocks it out of the park. The Khmer-style papaya salad was...
That was the highest price I’ve ever paid for bowl of pho and this was neither a large bowl (what I’m used to) or traditional pho. It was edible but I wouldn’t order it again for any price but especially not for that price. The service was acceptable. If you’re interested in traditional pho with the plate of basil, sprouts, and pepper slices this isn’t the place. If you’re looking for the place that has hoisin, chili paste, and sriracha you’ll need to look elsewhere. If you want rare steak pho, not here either. Maybe after I heal from the financial damage of soup at steak prices I’ll check out their other options but it isn’t likely to happen for a while (if ever). The place was clean and comfortable enough. I would have preferred to see fewer plastic bottles used for beverages. A single R/O system would be plenty to accommodate drinking water and if used for cooking would improve that too. My biggest issue is the price they charged for a single bowl of soup. Just the soup.
Good food, service was a little weird. We were brought our food but I had to go to the counter after 75 minutes where they asked me if I was ready to pay. I expected the bill to be brought to the table. Interior is basic, food value but was decent.
I've loved Cambodian Thai for years, starting in my undergrad days, so it definitely has a touch of nostalgia for me. I haven't been back in years and my hopes were high for a delicious meal reminiscent of my youth and for the most part, my expectations were met! I went with a party of 10 people and we were quickly seated. The service was excellent our waiter was young and seemed to be the only server but moved as fast as she could and was very attentive. As other reviews have mentioned, due to the short staff the service can be slow, so be prepared to have a leisurely meal. The atmosphere isn't the nicest, but the best meals can come from the humblest places. There's chipped paint and very basic table settings. I am happy to report THEY ARE USING REAL CHINA!! No more of the styrofoam and paper plates so reviled in the recent reviews! We started off with spring rolls, papaya salad, and chive dumplings. Al were fresh and delicious. My favorite was the papaya salad, very refreshing. I used to LOVE the chive dumplings in undergrad, but unfortunately the flavor was a bit lacking. The entrees come with a spice level from 1 10. My party ordered anywhere in the range from 1 to 9! For the most part, the ratings rang true, although the lone brave soul who opted for 9 reported it was not that spicy (perhaps putting on a brave face). I had the basil fried rice with tofu rates at 7, another nostalgic meal. Again, not quite as flavorful as memory served, but still delicious. As a bonus, the waitress let us know the restaurant is entirely family run. Her mom and dad own the place, and her Cambodian mom adapted the Thai recipes from ones she learned in a refugee camp. Her brothers found out the staff. Great story and great to see a South Bend treasure (hopefully) thriving. Overall, great food, great service, will always come back!
This review is LONG overdue. I frequented this spot in South Bend for 5 years, then moved to Chicago and still haven’t found a Thai place that compares. Cambodian Thai has the best drunken noodles in the game. I typically get it with tofu, but the beef is good too. Another recommendation is Cambodian spring rolls (I get mine with tofu instead of shrimp). They always taste fresh and the sauce that comes with it is good! I also love their take on Tum Yum soup. All in all, I love this place and stop by any time I’m in South Bend. I recommend calling your order in and doing pick up. During the pandemic, we did pick up pretty often in hopes they would be able to remain open. This is a great family owned business — give them a try!
