Bar n Grill in a very small town in the Loess Hills. Perfect stopping point for your motorcycle ride through the hills on a nice day. Place was clean and well kept up. Gravel parking lot, so beware of that if you wish not to ride or park on gravel. You can street park as well if that’s the case. Decor is not super modern but it not old by any means. It looks more like a neat up to date diner than a bar and grill. However, don’t let that deter you on the food. Started with onion rings. Price wise, this was the only thing I was a bit disappointed by. You can see the amount I got in the basket in my picture, and seemed quite lite for $8. You can literally get a chicken sandwich for about the same price. I was ok spending $8 on onion rings, but I’d like to feel that I’m getting $8 worth as well, and there just wasn’t a lot there. However they were good rings, and the ranch was good too. Seemed a little thicker than what I’m used to, but I enjoyed it that way. I had the Gunslinger burger which is the burger, pulled pork, bacon, cheddar, onion tanglers. It’s a popular favorite there. Sandwich was quite good. Plenty cooked, yet plenty of moisture. Good flavor as well. Menu lists it as $1 cheaper than what I was charged, so that needs updated in their menus. It’s only $1, but it’s a pet peeve of many people to be charged more than what the menu says, so it should really be updated, even if needing a ghetto sticker in each menu. I’d get the sandwich again, and I’d be willing to try other things as well. Chicken sandwich was also good. You can get it grilled or crispy and comes with lettuce, tomato and pickle. The choice for today was crispy. Was good and flavorful, and not dry. Worth getting again. Everything is a la carte, so fries were additional, however, if coupled with a sandwich, they are only $2.00 to add to each meal. They were piping hot and good fries. Nothing fancy, but when they are fresh and hot, it’s hard to go wrong. So, in a nutshell, it was a pretty good experience over all. Service was good, place was clean, prices for the most part were fair, and food was good. No doubt we’ll try this place again sometime. Iowa is no stranger to the Bar or Tavern but have you ever been to a proper Roadhouse? Well someday soon you’ll have to be like Swayze (or Sam Elliott and head over to Smithland and Buffalo Joes Roadhouse. Stepping in to a clean and unpretentious dining room with a bar and beers on tap, take a seat for some chicken sandwiches (crispy or grilled , pork sammiches, wings (with abundant sauces available and bodacious burgers. Brisket is available Friday and Saturday nights. We had the daily special: Nashville Hot Sliders (with sauce made in house! Coleslaw was tangy, sweet and crunchy and the fries were crispy as requested. Our waitress, Justina, was knowledgeable about their offerings, attentive and super friendly. Pack up the kids, hop on the bike or just take a drive for some great food, great prices and fun service. Protip: if you can spare the time out of Sioux City, take the Loess Hills Scenic Byway (Old 141 which takes you directly to Smithland. Beautiful scenic drive and then take the road back to the 29 to cruise back in to town. (Justina tipped us off to take that road especially in the fall for some beautiful sights .
