Contribuiți la feedbackHaving gone there in the past by tram from Heidelberg and walking up the stairs thru the vineyards, then up to the nice walk to the spot overlooking the granite ex-quarry, then coming back for well-earned bier, we knew about this place and suggested it for a group of 8 for a nice relaxed night out. Great choice. The table we got was at the back under the trees (it was 32 degrees C) and we still had a fantastic view of the area to the west of Heidelberg, as far as Mannheim and beyond. On a kinder weather day, or at lunch time with the sun overhead and the umbrellas up, we would have chosen one of the tables right next to a 30 meter drop, and even better views. The food was unpretentious German fare, (with the occasional International dish like garlic prawns and Creme Brulee) and my German friends all liked theirs. The highlights for the group were the Wiener Schnitzel and the Maultasche. The Spätzle were home made and I enjoyed mine with mushrooms and pork, though the sauce was a little salty to my taste (but this is common in Germany I have found.). Good with the beer. Of course, the side-salads were big and the servings huge. The wine list is fairly priced, with Schriesheim wines being prominent. Mostly we had Weißenbier. It is definitely cooler on a hot night as it also had a breeze whereas nothing at ground level. I will definitely go again on my next Heidelberg visit.
A place I loved in my childhood, my youth and now as a tourist destination when I visit from afar. The "Ritter von Strahl" was the first occupant of this mystical fortress. He guarded and defended the town, actually "Wine City" a title it received in the 14th century. For this protection, the farmers and vintners gave one tenth of their harvest to the Ritter. The wine was stored in the Zehntkeller (tenth-cellar) which today serves as a community hall. Over the centuries the "Burg" was destroyed several times. The last kick at the cat was delivered by Napoleon who, standing in the vineyards beside the castle, is to have said: Why would God waste such beauty on the Germans. I guess he underestimated the good taste of my countrymen, because we enjoy it tremendously.
If you want to take a rest and you want to leave the crowded and touristic sites in Heidelberg behind you, this is one of the best hidden places to go to. In the middle of wine yards you will find this old castle with a stunning view from its terrace where you can have tasty German food, friendly service and amazing atmosphere, especially during sunset. Go there by car, bike or scooter. Nice starting point for walking in the wine yards.
