China Coast Restaurant - Saint John

The restaurant offers excellent authentic regional cuisines, especially if you request the Chinese menu. I highly recommend trying the superb sliced pork in hot chili oil, Szechuan beef, or eggplant dish.

Yesterday, we mistakenly ordered from China Coast Saint John, thinking it was the location in Rothesay. Despite the mix-up, we decided to brave the snow storm and still went to pick up our order.

The young man greeting the customers should find a new line of work. When he took our order, instead of saying something like "what can I get you"...it was "What do you want". Food had good flavor, but I was wary of the rubbery, slimy chicken in the chow mein. Didn't seem cooked to me. Chicken balls were dry...Ate very little and gave the rest to my husband. He seemed to like it. I did not.

This restaurant use to be our thing every Sunday for Dinner, but not anymore. Something happened in the last few years, but it does not taste the same at all. Still OK place to eat but there is always another Chinese place somewhere around the corner.

Small & cute, has recently gone through some much needed renovations. Options include take out buffet ($6.99/lb) eat in buffet at $12.99 person. Buffet on weekends only.One & only complaint is that there is no price difference for a child, toddler or baby. They eat, they pay. This should be fixed.This is a family owned and operated restaurant. Some of the older members have limited English. All are quite pleasant. Egg rolls & wontons are made from scratch on site (quite neat to watch). Main waitress is sweet, pleasant & always cheerful. One and only time I had an issue with the buffet to go, I called up & explained the issue & matter was very quickly resolved in a great manner. Unlike what another reviewer has stated, I find the food is brought out fresh and kept plentiful. I have also seen an independent delivery driver stick his fingers into a dish in the buffet, when this was brought to their attention, the dish was immediately taken away and replaced.Health inspection report hangs on the wall, easily visible with only one minor violation (drink fridge needs to be repainted)China Coast is our main go to for Chinese food in Saint John. Best, most authentic in the city.
