Gullah Grub - Saint Helena Island

One of the best food experiences I’ve had in a long time. Bubba (whose family owns the joint) was our server and he couldn’t have been more friendly, interesting and engaging. I loved learning about his family, Gullah food, fox hunting… plus I had my first-ever gumbo and let me tell you — shrimp? It kinda freaks me out. So I was nervous. But it was SO good that I got another 16 oz cup to go. Whenever I’m in the area again, I will take whoever is with me to this restaurant.

This restaurant is a slice of history that needs to be preserved. The service was great. The history on the walls was awesome. For me the food was just ok. I liked the shark. I have never had shark before, so didn't know what to expect as far as texture was concerned. But the batter was seasoned well. I'm not a huge fan of potato salad on a normal day, so it was ok. The red rice was ok. The fried chicken was made well. It was very tasty. My friend's dad enjoyed the ribs. And my husband really liked the shrimp. I did not enjoy the sweet potato pie or the cobbler. But, others at the table did, so it probably has to do with our personal preferences when it comes to baked goods.

I would leave no stars if I could. Unremarkable food and the ABSOLUTE WORST service I have ever experienced!! Too bad, because I'm new to the area and Gullah Grub came recommended. Never again!! Fried shrimp lunch $12.50 was 9 bland, pathetic looking shrimp and a plain looking scoop of potato salad. That was not a good first impression but not the worst thing. I never tasted the potato salad because I never got any pepper despite asking 3 times and waiting more than 10 minutes. Yes, I almost always pepper food before tasting it, especially something like restaurant potato salad. Judge me if you want but my food, my choice. The server stayed almost entirely in the kitchen and was not busy since I was her only table. I couldn't shake the impression she was ignoring me intentionally. Maybe she was just having a very bad day, but that's not my fault and I just can't rationalize her actions. I certainly hope it's not because I'm an older white man and the server is a young black woman, but i don't know any other reason for such obviouspoor service. And before you think I went in there with an attitude or somehow annoyed her, I am a former server who is ALWAYS polite and cordial to waitstaff.

Everyone was friendly. The atmosphere was historical, which I love. The food was delicious. It was the best Mac and cheese pie I have ever eaten. I also didn't know shark fin tasted so good. The proce was wonderful for lunch. The portions were perfect. We left full and happy.

Amazing! My family tried shrimp gumbo, okrah and quinoa, ribs, potao salad, green beans, fried whiting, chicken, purlo rice, sweet potato pie, cornbread, peach cobbler, and lemonade. EVERYTHING FRESH AND HOMEGROWN. Thank you for a family memory and history lesson that we will always cherish.
