Unfortunately, the mood was set when the gin and tonic I ordered came in a water sized glass, and the waitstaff, while attentive, seemed to shout at guests instead of talking. I might be old, but I am not hard of hearing yet. Returning for a much anticipated German meal, I ordered the veal schnitzel and ended up with chicken. They were quick to fix it, but an oversight like that does influence my review. The spaetzel was also mediocre, but the struddle was good. Fond memories of past years romantic, white table cloth, fine dining are dashed. The Countryman's Pleasure seemed to be more of a tavern, than the fine dining I remember. I set the bar high, and this trip an old favorite did not measure up.
Wonderful to be able to return to Countryman's Pleasure in summer for another outstanding meal in such a lovely setting. We were greeted warmly by manager Kim, and the talented Chef Nicole came out to chat with us as well. The food is a wonderful, modern light take on traditional German/European cooking, and Nicole is happy to accommodate any dietary needs or allergies. Don't let the quirky name which is from the founding family and slightly off the main road location deter you.; it's worth a trip from Killington/Pico or Rutland and you'll enjoy it!
The staff went out of its way to make our 55th Anniversary special, and we appreciated that. We selected Countryman's Pleasure because of their menu. We wanted something different, and the sauerbraten hit the mark. Our table looked attractive and inviting and we were pleasantly surprised by the Happy Anniversary message.
We had a delicious meal from start to finish! The lobster bisque and french onion soup were excellent, as were the duck breast and sauerbraten entrees. We concluded with the pavlova. We will be returning!
