Introduction: This year my family and I have tried eight different locations' Chinese tamales before finding Hugo Foods's Chinese tamales: frankly theirs are legitimate and don't disappoint. Food: Unlike the Cantonese version of the rice wrap, the Taiwanese version is very different. Cantonese rice wraps there's green bean paste, flavored glutinous rice, and a hunk of pork meat. According to my best friend [who's Cantonese], what Cantonese people look for in a good Cantonese rice wrap is the green bean paste. For the Taiwanese rice wrap a legitimate one is composed of flavored glutinous rice, dried shrimps, a spice that resembles bonito flakes, shiitake mushroom, salted egg, and a hunk of pork meat. Literally it's been years since I had a legitimately good Taiwanese rice wrap; for the past many years the Taiwanese rice wraps on the market are just terrible: the portion size's too small, the rice is bland/lacks flavor, many don't have dried shrimps or shiitake mushroom and the pork is often too lean and dry. The rice wrap at Hugo Foods is good: the rice is well-flavored as it should be. The dried shrimps, shiitake mushroom, and bonito flakes are there to impart fragrance to the glutinous rice [very important]. The pork is not dry which is good but it's a little too lean for my taste. Personally, I prefer pork in the rice wrap to have a 60% lean with 40% fat ratio. Service: The proprietor is polite, accommodating, down to earth, and treats her customers right. Price: Each rice wrap at Hugo Foods cost $4.50. The price is reasonable considering the amount of ingredients used as well as the level of culinary execution.
Not sure why it's showing closed on yelp, but I just went to pick up some frozen food from them last week. It's located in a food court. Friendly service. Authentic TW food. Loved their fresh stinky tofu (pbb best in the area). I air-fried it at home and ate with the kimchi and sauce that came with the tofu. Super delicious but my house smelled kinda scary for awhile ha. Oh and fish roe sausage was awesome!!!! Try it!
