Trattoria Il Timoniere - Roma

Very odd place. No one else was at the restaurant but the 4 of us. The owner/server/chef/dishwasher was all the same pets. He was very lovely, the food was mediocre. Our taxi driver was a bit worried when he dropped us off, evidenced by his return to check on us.

This is the place your mouth has been dreaming about. Those Italian food places (I won't call them restaurants) wish they could achieve what this tucked away gem seems to serve regularly: awesomeness. The cacio e pepe (tonnarelli) is amazing. The house red is perfect. The waitstaff is friendly and warm. The tiramisu is decadent and well worth the search for a parking spot.

I'd seen Il Timoniere on an episode of one of Anthony Bourdain's television shows and felt intrigued. The food was better than that for which my already hyped tastebuds were prepared. My girlfriend and I were the only customers in the place and we enjoyed every course, eating well past the time we were full because the food was too delicious. The pricing was very reasonable as well. In a city overrun with tourists, Il Timoniere is an oasis of authentic cuisine in a residential neighborhood, away from the throngs of Colosseum selfie-takers. I enjoyed speaking with the Bangladeshi chef who had appeared on the episode of Anthony Bourdain's show, and the Italian woman who arrived later and possibly owned the restaurant. They were both friendly and encouraged my rusty Italian. Eating at Il Timoniere was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy.

Per me rimane n. 1 su roma. Ogni volta che vengo a roma non posso mangiare al timoniere, mi piace tutto: dalla qualità del cibo (prodotti freschi portati sul mercato di giorno) alla gestione e alla posizione, tipici delle trattorie romane di una volta. Mi sento a casa. molto buona signora Luciana che come sempre prova un cuoco eccellente. Consiglio bruschette con fiori di zucca, gricia e, il mio piatto preferito, il taglio di manzo!
