The pan fried baozi skin was a little too thick. And the pig ears were tasteless and under seasoned. They tasted only of the chili oil that they were tossed with. Definitely willing to give it another try and try some other dishes.
I truly wanted to enjoy this restaurant, but it seems I may not have chosen the right dishes. I ordered a mushroom noodle dish, a beef rice noodle dish, and a rice cake dessert, and unfortunately, none of them met my expectations. Before placing my order, I asked the waiter if the noodles were handmade, and she assured me they were. However, the noodles turned out to be made from dried noodles, not even the fresh frozen variety. The mushroom noodle dish used canned mushrooms, and the soup base was overly salty, despite my request for less salt. Additionally, the broth lacked any real flavor.
I was disappointed by the much-praised soup dumplings, which seemed second-rate to me. I feel sorry for anyone who brings their friends here for a taste of authentic Chinese cuisine, as this falls far short of genuine Taiwanese food. The dumpling wrappers were subpar, and only the filling was somewhat decent. Overall, none of the dishes lived up to expectations. It's clear that the chef was rushed in preparing them. This experience certainly didn't justify the time and effort of visiting the restaurant.
The star of the show here is the soup dumplings, which are big, flavorful, and a joy to eat! I came in around 5pm on a Tuesday as a solo diner and was seated immediately; plenty of empty tables, though there were a decent number of people by the time I left. I also got the salt and pepper squid, which was crisp and golden, but a little lacking in flavor: I would have appreciated a bit more salt, and perhaps some hot peppers, as I've had with the dish elsewhere. By far the best Chinese restaurant in DMV. Their XLBs are incredible and other dumpling dishes are great too. Dan dan noodle and fried rice were also delicious. I don?t think I ever had any bad food from here. They don?t accept any credit cards and really busy during the weekend dinner time. Highly recommended!
