The variety and various preparations of fresh fish is tremendous--so much so we returned the following day for other options at this must-go storefront. The scallops with rice and garlic cheese is to die for! Most items are displayed cafeteria style so one can see what is available. Highly recommend!
We went for lunch, it was us and an avalanche of Chinese and Japanese. After walking around a bit, we decided to take: 1 tray with 5 oysters and 5 prawns, 1 crab, 1 tray with 6 pieces of mixed sushi. The very good crab, you can take it directly at the counter, we thought we had to cook it (you can with a supplement of 10 dollars) but it was ready (great fishmongers who are very kind); we had sushi mixed in front of our eyes. Then we went to the only liquor store to get a small bottle of white wine. He also sells them from the fridge. In short, a total account of everything including wine, 60 dollars. For that raw in Italy I don't know how much they would have asked us! If you like it raw, take advantage of it, with all that goodness it's a shame to get fried and grilled.
We went today to see what the good reviews were about. Nothing substantiated in claims. We ordered the grilled seafood platter for 2. There was barely enough seafood for one person and a pile of chips - one small piece of fish, 4 small prawns, 2 scallops, some rubbery tiny octopus and a few thin pieces of calamari. Surely this was a joke and only meant for one person? Total rip off for$45.50!!! How do they get away with it?! The fish market is a tourist trap for Asian tourists. Avoid eating there.
We ordered the grilled seafood platter for $45.50 and what we got was:- 2 small scallops- 1 oyster mornay and 1 oyster kilpatrick- 1 fillet of fish (which was fresh)- 1 prawn skewer (which wasn't the fresh prawn option I asked for)- Heaps of cooked octopus and squid- And lots of chipsThe amount of seafood was only enough for one person and for what we paid for, in my opinion, is terribly over-priced.I now fully understand what a tourist trap the fish market truly is.The hordes of people, mostly Asian tourists, stuffing their faces with over-priced food is enough to put me off going back ever again. I am Chinese and haves lived in Sydney for the past 8 years.
We went here Sat lunch time, and it was hectic, but that's all a part of the fish market experience, we ordered the platter for 2 at 40 dollars and it was delicious oysters prawns calamari scallops fish seafood sticks and chips, more than enough for 3 of us. Definitely worth a visit.
