Unpolished and unwilling service. I met a group of friends for dinner but arrived a bit early and decided to have a drink at the bar. There were no open places available, so I ordered a drink and asked one of the staff if I could sit at one of the high peaks next to the bar. He said, okay, so I waited there. The hostess came with an acceptable look and informed me that I could not sit there because this table is for customers who order and drink food. Forgive me, but why do I assume I didn't order food? It was a happy hour... maybe you thought to offer a menu instead of leaving me? When I explained that there were clearly no seats at the bar and asked where she expected me to have my drink, she replied cool, well, you could wait until a room is available. So I should just be in the middle of the restaurant without sitting? This woman must have repeated, It is our policy... blah blah blah half a dozen times. It is your policy to ask a customer to clear a table when it has placed an order when there are several empty tables? Really terrible, disgusting behavior. Not sure whether I was bizarrely marginalized in this way or it really is their (bad) policy, but really they should learn to treat customers with a little more respect.
The experience was excellent, although it was a bit noisy to have a conversation with the couple at the next table, we managed to communicate.
Monday nights seem to be a slow time at this restaurant, as we didn't receive very attentive service. We ordered drinks but our server never came back to ask if we wanted anything else. If we had wanted to order a bottle of wine, it was never brought up. This was a special birthday celebration for us, so we were disappointed with the lack of attention to detail.
I visited Saltaire during restaurant week and wanted to try a seafood restaurant. When I saw the selections on the restaurant week dinner menu I was very disappointed. I wish I knew ahead of time before making reservation, I would have by passed this place For appetizers, there weren’t too many appealing choices so I chose the New England clam chowder. My husband chose the mussels fra diavalo. He enjoyed them. For dinner, only 1 seafood selection which was salmon which I chose. My husband chose a “seafood “ bolonese sauce over macaroni. Other entrees were chicken and beef cheeks. My chowder came and it was not what I expected. It had a smoky taste to which I found unpleasant. After our waiter took our order and found we weren’t ordering wine and off the regular menu he was not so attentive any more. He was more attentive to the tables ordering from regular menu. Eventually our dinners arrived and I must say my salmon portion was very small in comparison to a regular order from menu. It was good though. My husband received the bolonese pasta dish and it was very large in size. No seafood in site, just in sauce. Desserts aren’t even worth mentioning. Had to wait a substantial amount of time to get our check. Did not like our dining experience and would not go back there again!
