Benny's Vegan - Phnom Penh

Great choice, tasty and affordable! not in the city center, but definitiw the trip worth!

Comes from organic products, the entire vegan menu has standard menus such as mushroom burger and spring rolls to chmer and Asian foods. pinklin is a cheerful host that offers ice-cold beer and highlights fresh sugar cane and fruit juices as well as a variety of other drinks.

We took a long trip out to this place, as we wanted to support the vegan business. At least it was listed as vegan. When we arrived we were welcomed and seated by the friendly owner. I was intrigued by the passionfruit with soy milk option, which sounded fruity and creamy. My heart sank when I saw the owner walk past me with a carton of Lactosoy, a non vegan soy milk. I asked to see the packaging to double check (as the brand does have a vegan variety) and milk solids were listed. I changed my order to a passionfruit smoothie. For lunch we ordered the fried rice, fried Morning Glory and tempeh burger. As the owner was preparing all the food herself from scratch, it took a while to arrive. It was all fine: simple but good, and certainly cheap. I had planned to quietly mention the soy milk to the owner as we left, but she got in first and asked me if I had declined the soy milk because it wasn’t vegan. She explained that it was difficult to source vegan soy milk and that the restaurant was focused on keeping prices low so everybody could afford to eat there. I am sympathetic to the sentiment I’m a privileged traveller who can dine in vegan hipster cafes because of the dollar to riel exchange rate and to the challenges of running a small restaurant,, but I can’t overlook a non vegan place advertising itself as vegan and allow it to go unreported. It would be simple to remove this single item from the menu if it’s not possible to make it vegan. #Veganuary Updated from previous review on 2024 01 31

Great please to stop for a meal. Quiet place, Wi-Fi, delicious food, reasonable price. Everything we needed. #Veganuary

Stopped here for breakfast, which was fantastic. Owners are very friendly and went out of their way to help us hire a driver for the day!
