Contribuiți la feedbackI see that others have reviewed Fillos and have had a different experience to the Gumbys so if we return perhaps we'll go totally Greek as it is the Greek food which seems to get the most praise.Mr Gumby chose the veal and I can only say that it was tasteless. It needed a decent jus or sauce. Mrs Gumby had the soup and the salted cod. She liked the salted cod but was not so keen on the soup. The ambience was spoilt by the indifferent greeting we got on arrival but I have to say that the person who appeared to be the restaurant manager was very friendly and welcoming.Perhaps they had an off day. Would the Gumbys return? Maybe.
A busy Friday night at the Hellenic Club, start of a long weekend. I'd booked several days beforehand in their newest restaurant, Fillos, for dinner with my husband and teenage children. When we arrived however, we were directed to a high, small table with bar stools. No thanks. The hostess, Karen, beautiful and calm, asked us to wait in the lounge so she could reseat us at a table with chairs. Much better. We ordered four entrees to share. Beetroot dip with flatbread $10, panfried saganaki cheese $13, zucchini balls $12 and charcoal grilled calamari $17. I'd order all again, except the calamari. Unfortunately it was tough and yet bizarrely some seemed almost raw!The dip was sensational, probably the nicest beetroot dip I've ever had and the bread was soft and warm. Along with oozing and golden saganaki and light and fluffy zucchini balls it was fun to share and a convivial start to the meal. The restaurant was buzzing, the staff were lovely and attentive and the wine list is the same as the bistro's - we ordered a Shiraz from the ever reliable Ben Potts $45 a and it was very drinkable - velvety and smooth. We each chose a different main - I had lamb souvlaki with flatbread, salad and chips. It was really enjoyable - two decent sized skewers of marinated lamb (fair bit of garlic with this dish) fresh salad and large chunky Greek style chips. My husband had lamb shanks - he said they were fine - to my eye it looked a bit dry, however he ate it all. My daughter loved her braised lamb with spaghetti - Kokinisto - she said the pasta was cooked perfectly and it looked appetising. My son had the wood fired Con Pollo pizza and said it was just like his favourite pizza from when the Trattoria was there. The mains were all around the $20 mark. We didn't have room for dessert however next time I'd like to try one. The owner, Tim, told me that Fillos means friends in Greek and I think he's nailed it with the lively atmosphere and good feeling at this new venture.Really enjoyed our first visit and would like to sample a few other dishes on the strength of this experience.
We have been dining at the Hellenic Club of Canberra for more than 20 Years each time we visit our friends in Canberra . We have always enjoyed the place and the nice big steaks and the atmosphere. This time again we dine in the completely renovated Hellenic Club. The immense entrance with black and white tiles looks like the entrance of a Casino. The different restaurants look very cosy. The staff are nice but a little bit to casual. The food presented lacks of imagination for the decoration ( lettuce, cucumber tomato )i miss my steak (no more red meat any more)My calamari was a little bit small for the price. In a pub i would have had a better served.Sorry guy you have to improve the food in this beautiful place.
This is now my favourite restaurant. Fantastic authentic Greek food that will keep me coming back time and time again. Just love the 7 plate banquet, awesome value for money and let them pick the dishes. You wont be disappointed.
After loving their food van in Braddon, I took my mum to Fillos at the Hellenic Club for dinner and was not disappointed. I had the saganaki to start and moussaka for main, and my mother has the lobster mornay for main (from the specials board and only $40 for a full lobster) and the filo pastry and semolina custard for dessert and we were both loved it. The food was really great and the service was excellent - plenty of people and really attentive. The atmosphere is nice and it wasn't too loud. We'll definitely be back.
