We came for lunch today and I ordered the rigatoni with olives. The pasta came and it was hard. I told them it wasn’t cooked and asked if they could cook it for longer. They took it away, cooked it again and the pasta was still hard. So I asked if i could have the ravioli instead as I’d ordered it for my daughter. They brought me that raviolo and it was lovely. When we went to pay, they had added the rigatoni although I had not ate it. I told the owner that I wouldn’t pay for the rigatoni and he immediately started threatening me. He told me that I needed to pay for it because they’d cooked it twice, that other patrons had ordered it and they’d eaten it without a problem, that he was going to call the Carabinieri on me for not paying. I told him to go right ahead and call the Carabinieri. Then his wife? started telling me that I was wrong before he shushed her so he could yell at me some more. He then told me to get out of his restaurant so I started to leave and he told me that I couldn’t leave without paying. So I said I would pay for what we ate. I started to walk out to put my daughter’s backpack in the car while I waited for the police. I gave it to my partner and, as I turned around to go back in, the man walked out and told me to leave and that he didn’t want my money. I honestly wish I was making this up. I could not believe what I was hearing and the scene he was creating over a plate of pasta that amounted to .25c worth of ingredients. There had been no drama up until that point. I wasn’t upset with them, I just wanted my pasta to be cooked. Being a bonafide Italian myself and a decent cook, I know what al dente is. The pasta I tried to eat was way before al dente. We both couldn’t believe how abysmally and unprofessionally the owner behaved. Everything he did was completely uncalled for. The level of arrogance was palpable. He and his entire crew could do with an extra large serving of humble pie.
We ate here one evening while we stayed in the agriturismo. The owner is lovely, as are the whole family, and the rest of the staff were very young but extremely competent. The food was very tasty indeed, as well as the house wine. Sitting outside in the veranda is a real pleasure on a warm summer evening. I'd happily recommend eating here and we'll surely come back.
