Le Canton - Paris

For years, it was our Chinese betting restaurant. food has always been very good.

It's chic, it's good, a welcome beyond the clichés. We have to share. We're good, we like, we're coming back. Imperial. Bravo and see you soon. françois

Small dinner with my daughter, it was she who knew the canton, friendly setting, very 6th arrondissement , excellent nems, very refreshing salad, onion beef and bobun, excellent, unpretentious restaurant, good reception, nothing to say go there, and at the very, very correct price level, we will even say cheap for this select neighborhood.

Madame and I had a fine and restorative dinner at Le Canton on a recent Saturday evening. She had been in Paris on her own for a few days while I went off to Tbilisi to do some lecturing, and I had just gotten back that afternoon. By the time dinner rolled around I'd been awake (barely, at times) since Oh-Dark-Hundred and we wanted to keep matters simple.Le Canton really filled the bill. It is a small place -- the room we were in, which I believe is the only dining space, holds maybe twenty guests at a time, give or take. The place is very quiet, service was quick and friendly, and the cooking was superb. Nems and shrimp shou mai to begin were followed by orange chicken for Madame, and orange duck for me; the flavors were subtle and complex, the servings were just the right size (despite my boyish, youthful appearance I have the appetite -- and the aches and pains -- of a senior citizen), and a nice dry rose by the carafe topped off the proceedings perfectly. The bill was another really good surprise, aided by the downright reasonable price (E8-) for that essential carafe of wine.We went early -- seems to me we sat down at 6:30 or so -- and the place filled up rapidly, so reservations might be advisable. When and if we're lucky enough to be back in Paris, Le Canton will likely be our first stop (and probably again later on in the visit, once the jet-lag fog lifts...)...Le Canton is strongly recommended.
