Many thanks for a nice lunch today. I will tell everyone about our experience and we look forward to a visit soon!
We stayed at an Airbnb, walking distance from the Barley. It became our go to for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!! We were so well looked after by all the staff who were friendly and helpful. Their food is terrific, definitely a cut about your standard pub chow and very reasonably priced. They have an awesome garden and outside seating area with plenty of room for larger parties. Thank you to everyone there who made our trip that much more enjoyable.
Smart but casual pub with very friendly staff. We both had the fish and chips, which were tasty if slightly oily. Nice decor and overall good atmosphere on a busy Saturday lunchtime.
Went for a lovely Sunday morning walk ahead of lunch at the Barley Mow, following a circular route which starts and ends in the pub car park. By the time we got back, the car park was full so do book ahead. Anyway, onto lunch itself. As always, the staff at the Barley Mow gave us a warm welcome and were very attentive. We had booked a table for 5, so it was a little disappointing to be squeezed onto a table for four with an extra seat. There is a wide choice of roasts including Sirloin beef, stuffed pork and duo of lamb. I went for the beef which was delicious with a huge Yorkshire pudding on the side. Plenty of veg too including a creamy cauliflower cheese and braised red cabbage which was amazing. Despite being quite full, we decided to go for dessert, but these were a bit of a let down after how good the main courses were. In fairness, the chocolate brownie did look very nice but the deconstructed lemon cheesecake was a disappointment. Served in a fluted brass cocktail glass, it was over half full of crushed ginger nut biscuits with only a tiny layer of creamy lemon topping. This made it surprisingly dry. And the bread and butter pudding was unlike any I've seen before (and not in a good way). The bread was thick and dry, absorbing none of the custard which looked to be more your standard yellow powdered variety, so acting more like a sandwich filling. The staff were very apologetic though and did agree it looked somewhat unusual so refunded that dessert. I would still definitely come back on the strength of the roasts though, but perhaps skip pudding!
Randomly picked this location to meet half way between two friends getting together for a birthday celebration. What a great find!! Nicely fitted out, great staff and amazing food. Total enjoyed and recommended. Eton mess dessert pic attached.
